Only 17,000 miles on Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4

Just stopped in at Discount Tire for balancing and learned that 3 are down to 4/32 and passenger rear at 2/32. At this point I’m a little disappointed and venting slightly to the CL folks. I expected to get more than 18K on a set of premium rubber.
Pros
- Smooth ride and comfort, but firm enough for sporty handling on on and off ramps.
- Very little vibration over the life of the tire. For the first time I felt a shimmy at 80/85 this weekend which prompted the balancing this morning.
- Good looking tire
Cons
- Obviously higher than expected wear, but the tread wear warranty should cover some of the replacement. 45,000 mile warranty which is half 22.5k for staggered.
Options going forward
1. Replace all 4 and apply the warranty
2. Buy 2 front rims and replace all 4. I would upsize to 245/40 all around
3. change wheels to either OEM Lux 18s or tuning fork 19s, will thus have the ability to rotate for longer life
Writing this post from Discount Tire right now, so need to do some research. Thanks for reading my small vent.
Edit: Checked my service records and actually got 18,000 miles on this set, not 16 or 17K as I originally thought..

Last 15 years or so I’d given up on the budget 2nd tier brands and moved on to premium brands like Goodyear and Michelin. I found better performance, handling and tread life. I’m thinking the 2nd tiers might have closed the performance gap by now so I’m thinking of giving Yokohama a try. Will get a quote tomorrow.

My other friend has Yoko on his IS and somehow rubbed against the curb and damaged his tire and it needed to be replaced.

I have the same tires and it's at 20K but still good. But I was told it won't last more than 25K since we can't rotate with the staggered wheel setup. I also go them from Discount Tire and likely go back for new tires. There's a promo for online offer in our area for $110 and $150 discount if purchased online.
With online promo... $1,518
With warranty... $1,137
.. with balancing and certificates (road hazard). Tires are pricey!
Upsizing though to 245/40 and 275/35.

Tell me more about this different compounds please. I need these tires to last 100K. miles. ![Smilie](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I had the America's Tire 4S on my GS before and at almost 5K, they still looked ok when I trade it in and I didn't go easy on them during those 5K miles either.

You should check out Tirerack.com. Got a great deal on a new set of Bridgestone Potenza Sport summer tires (SoCal resident here) this past Labor Day weekend from Tirerack, 245-40-19 fronts and 275-35-19 rears. Set is currently on sale for around $582 before tax, so it's about half price. Tirerack website states they are 2020 production but received mid 2021 manufactured tires.
Hoping I get at least around 15-20K miles from this set, seems treadwear is the biggest complaint with this specific model. Drove the OE Bridgestone Potenza RE050A set that came with the car when I bought it brand new for around 30K miles (tread depth 2-3/32 remaining) before I replaced it with a set of General G-Max RS - drove for 25K miles with about 3-4/32 tread remaining.
No complaints so far, dry traction has been great. Sharp steering and firmer sidewall vs my previous GMax RS. Potenza Sport tires seem to run smoother and are better at absorbing road imperfections. Noise is about the same when both are new. Over 600 miles driven so far and will be my new favorite tires if I get over 15K+ miles.

There are two types of wheel and tire imbalance; static and couple. Static is the up and down vibration and couple is the side to side or the "steering wheel shake" you can get. Research shows that a tire and wheel that is vibrating can almost always be fixed by only accounting for the static imbalance in an assembly. The static or up an down imbalance is always the more prominent problem. That being said, 'Smart Weight' is a very good thing for many reasons. (1) It optimizes the static imbalance to certain limits where you should not feel a vibration and (2) it actually moves the weights to a slightly different position and usually only requires weight placement on one side and this saves the shop time and money because less wheel weights are used and it's faster. (3) It keeps uneducated or lazy techs from looking at the screen that says .25 and .50 and saying "eh, good enough".
If a particular vehicle is super sensitive, then the owner should be looking at the vehicle's modified or worn suspension parts or the wheels as the culprit for a shimmy or vibration.
