Default How long do TPMS sensors last in 4GS?

I had Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ in my 2016 GS 200T since Jan 2017. Lexus dealership installed these tires. Replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 last Saturday (around 7:00 pm) from a Discount Tire. Previous tires and current tires are exactly same spec that came from the factory. The TPMS was working fine until the tires were replaced. After replacing, the TPMS light did not come on but all four tire pressures are showing as ---. I went to another Discount Tire. First they said the sensors need to reprogrammed, then checked the four tires with a tool and inferred that one sensor (front passenger) is not working.

How long do these TPMS sensors last in the 4GS? Do you replace them after every 7-8 years, or whenever you get new tires? In my Nissan vehicles, they have run for 10+ years and multiple tire changes.

How much do the OEM TPMS sensors cost? Is there an online store that sells OEM TPMS sensors at a discounted rate?

Update: I got the chance to drive the car with the new tires and this TPMS situation for the last 6 days. Everyday in the morning (around 8:30 am, outside temp 70-75 degree F) when I first started the car, all four tire pressures showed as ---. I reset the TPMS but nothing happened. I drove for a few mins. Then I reset the TPMS and all four tire pressures showed up correctly. What is going on?

About 10 years.

Rockauto.com is where I get my sensor. Denso/Pacific Industries are OEM.

I literally just had this issue and got all 4 sensors replaced at the dealer.
It was a total of $561.64. $251.64 for parts and $320 for labor.

Parts
42607-30060 - VALVE SUB-ASSY, TIRE 4 - $251.64
Labor $310.00 1. Replaced 4 TPMS Senors and programmed new sensors. All sensors reading at this time. TPMS light is no longer flashing.

forgot to add. 2016 GS350 204k miles

10+ years is about right. They are finicky for sure, as replacing tires or rotating wheels/tires can cause them to act bizarrely. And, when the climate turns colder that too can upset how that act. Rarely, if ever, is the actual problem the batteries, but of course that is most everybody's first thought...and there's been a lot of money wasted buying and having installed new ones.

Last trip to Discount, they rotated the driver's side.

Aside from the scraping sound, you could tell there was an issue because all 4 tires read as --. Once they swapped front and rear on the driver side, the pressures started showing up again. So to bclexus' point, maybe they are acting funky from a rotation?

If you had a scan tool, you can see the pressures reported by the sensors, among other things (like a code), to see if the system is even reading the tires.

7 or 8 years is the lower end but it happens. Other factors come in to play but when you replace tires sometimes that’s the breaking point. Yea they might have cracked one but it’s likely that the battery died. Best deal I have seen is rock auto for oem and then have them installed/ programmed.

I replaced all 4 tpms sensors on my car last December on my 2013 GS. I brought my own denso(exactly same as oem) tpms sensors from Rock Auto($155.16 for all 4) to the tire shop. Shop charged $20 per corner to install(including mount/balance). I programmed the sensors myself in techstream, literally takes minutes. You can also buy Carista and change the sensor id's yourself. Only reason I programmed the sensors myself is because the shop wanted to charge me 1 hour labor for a 5 minute job.

If your around the 9-10 year mark and your getting new tires, just change all 4 TPMS sensors.

My last car I took apart my instrument cluster and put electrical tape over the TPMS LED, out of sight out of mind lol

Exactly what I was thinking. All my TPMS were working perfectly with the old tires and started malfunctioning just after the tire change. The Discount Tire manager told me over the phone that sometimes happens because when the sensor is in a deflated tire, it uses up a lot of battery trying to read the pressure. I don't think that makes sense.

Another Discount Tire tried to reprogram my sensors. They used a scan tool near each tire valve. It worked for all tires except the front passenger one, so they declared that TPMS to be faulty. Then I filled all four tires with air to 35 psi (previously they were at 33 psi). Then all four tire pressures displayed correctly. I drove to work and parked the car outside for about 8-9 hours. When I started again, the tire pressures showed ---. I reset the TPMS from the dash a number of times but that did not help.

Many thanks to MX73, lexo98, peasodos for recommending Rockauto, and to shadowx055, peasodos for sharing your prices. Currently, Rockauto's price for Denso TPMS (Part # 42607-30060) is $39.79 for each sensor + shipping. I found this in Amazon:

$36.99 for 4 sensors + tax
Amazon Amazon

To add another twist that can cause them to display dashes (- - - -) is adding air intentionally to overinflate the tires and then releasing some air to purposely tweak them down to the psi you want them to be.

Without a doubt the biggest troublemaker I found that triggered dashes to be displayed with my 2013 GS 350 was the ambient temperature turning colder. A couple of winters I went for months the dashes displayed only randomly about half the time.

There behavior is definitely quirky - actually it's probably the module control that is at fault.

Also, 95% of the time the sensors don’t show pressures until you start driving. If you just get in and start the car you are most likely going to see dashes until you start moving.

Get the Denso it’s oem, not worth saving $3 per tpms for some unknown brand.

It is $160 for the Denso vs. $37 for the unknown brand. Still I will probably go with the Denso if needed.
