I think reality is that 2.5l V6 would sell well in GS.
Although I am surprised they didnt update it a bit, maybe new powertrains are coming quite soon enough.

While I dont have a personal vendetta against small powertrains in luxury cars, I dont think I can take any more lexus bashing through the media and on other car enthusiast sites. They are going to have a field day with this one.

The media can bash what they want. They can rave about their turbo 4 BMWs and Audis but 3-5 years down the line when the greatest and newest of those cars hit showrooms they would forget all about the current models. It will then be the original buyers of these cars who are stuck with potentially problematic and high maintenance powertrains.

Looking to compete against BMW’s 520d and Audi’s A6 2.0 TDI, Lexus is flexing its hybrid muscles and developing a smaller hybrid engine for its new-generation GS. Given its success in building and selling hybrid engines and models, it’s no surprise that Lexus is looking to add a smaller h-variant for the European market, which will also be getting the GS450h and GS250 upon release.
The North American market will receive a GS350 and GS Hybrid, along with the high-performance GS F Sport, so it’s unknown whether or not we’ll see the smaller hybrid engine. Chances are though, Europe will get a smaller, more affordable 4-cylinder powerplant with around 180-hp. Lexus is looking to be competitive with BMW’s 520d, aiming to get around 50-mpg.
Lexus confirms that a decision is around the corner regarding the smaller hybrid engine and that an announcement should be made prior to GS’ launch in the UK next summer.

I'm unsure what the issue is outside the double standard that Lexus is doing it. The Germans have done this for decades. The 5 series here has a 528 entry level car. The 535 has the power of the GS 350. The 5 here has had an entry level model for sometime now and it attracts customers who want that size/type car and don't care about power. The new one will now have a turbo 4-cylinder.
I said for the last gen, they should have kept the GS 300 has a base model, then have 350/450h/460....A base GS with 300hp is actually too much for most people. Its great news the GS will offer an entry level hybrid GS 300h as myself and a few others here have stated that would be a brilliant move.

Here is a euro PR
Increasingly important in the automotive calendar, the 9th China International Auto show is held at the futuristic China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou. It is here that the new Lexus GS 250 makes its world premiere.
With a bold new design, powerful performance, dynamic handling and a host of advanced technologies, the new GS 250 represents a powerful change. An advanced 2.5-litre aluminium-alloy V6 petrol engine powers the new GS 250, which can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. A 6-speed automatic gearbox seamlessly transmits in excess of 200 DIN hp and more than 250 Nm of torque to the rear wheels for effortless performance, while paddle shift controls let the driver make rapid gear changes.
Following the reveal of the new GS 350 at Pebble Beach, the premiere of the GS 450h in Frankfurt and the debut of new GS F SPORT models in Las Vegas, the choice of Guangzhou in China for the launch of the new GS 250 underscores the truly global nature of the Lexus brand.
The new GS 250 will go on sale in Europe in 2012.

BMW 2.0T has 240hp, 260lb ft
Audi 2.0T has 211hp, 258 lbft
Infiniti 2.5 V6 has 218hp, 217lbft
Lexus 2.5 V6 has 205hp, 198lbft
It's not a big difference, but the end result will be more of a sluggish luxury car, versus a sport sedan.

It is a good idea, except for the fact that this is the lowest powered of the entry level engines.

Something tells me that once IS goes on sale with new engines we will see GS updated next year as well. I agree about 3.5 as is, you really don't need more except maybe few more MPGs but 2.5 should have been either replaced or updated, its really and old age of powertrain. True it's smooth as butter and performance wise it's not that bad, it could do a lot better but what really bothers is those 12l/100km in city. Smoothness doesn't justify that much gas.

Problem is it's a V6 instead of a I4. Small V6 means it will be kind of lazy and it will sip a lot of gas compared to performance it offers. GS250 will be slower than 520i and it will probably be less efficient as well since it's a sixer.
