Default Automobile & Motor Trend Mag: Lexus GS Challenge - Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Here is the Lexus GS Challenge presented by Automobile Magazine & Motor Trend Magazine. This event was held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway back in December. I did get a chance to participate in this event, which is why you saw GS pics at a speewday being tweeted and posted on our official Facebook account. This is a really comprehensive review of the new GS in comparison to the new 5 Series and E Class. Check it out!

Looks like very tame driving. Not sure how much you can learn from that. Also looked like there was a lot of body roll. Did these cars have APSSS?

Didn't most reviewers say that the 535i felt subjectively faster in straight line acceleration? Yet the 0-60 and 1/4 mile figures show the 4GS being the faster car in a straight line. And don't forget the 535i has an 8 speed autobox vs the 4GS' 6 speed. Seems like Lexus is under-rating the engine or the GS is appreciably lighter than the 535i.

^ gs def. lighter, and more cogs don't necessarily translate to more speed, usually done for fuel economy / smoothness, plus with the bmw's turbo, it helps keep the engine in more of a sweet spot rpm range.

the word "feel" is the key imho, very subjective. a car can "feel" fast by different factors, etc...

So GS350 F-Sport:
- faster on autox track, "a lot easier to drive"
- better brakes, 106ft vs 114ft on BMW vs 121ft on MB
- acceleration: Lexus fastest, surprised everyone at high rpms where it kept going.

And now we know why they stuck with GR V6. Because it kicks **** :-).

The challenge will be sustaining this advantage.

The 535i is a detuned engine running an ultra conservative 8psi of boost. The 35is engines turn out about 350hp and 370lbft. If I was BMW, given how strong the Lexus and the Audi A6 are performing, I think they should just make the 35is setup standard on all the N55 engines.

Also its a shame they didn't throw the A6 into the mix here. I think the A6 is more likely to be cross-shopped with the GS since they are both the value brands in this segment. The GS is a much nicer car, but I suspect the A6 would beat these numbers.

The IS/GS gearing is super aggressive. Most who race against them don't realize it. Lexus redesigned the new GS to be within a few pounds of the old one. The latest 5 series grew 400 pounds over the old one

I always suspected it was in part to the massive amount of torque out of the 3.5. Infiniti 3.7, GM 3.6, none of them match it

The 0-60 website gives the Audi A6 3.0T Premium Quattro a 0-60 time of 5.7

Subjective feel it is exact word. I recently drove c250 and got feel that the car was really fast. It is common problem of all underpowered cars instead of steep acceleration curve, they give you spikes on downshifting making you feel like the car is a rocket.

Nice job, Lexus
I wish to see how A6 stands against these numbers. I have subjective feel, it will top all these cars.

Edit: I found confirmation http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...a6_first_test/
Yes Audi is far ahead, however price point can make your decision toward Lexus, unless you want wifi router in dash.
