What's more fun to drive as a sports car, the 2013 GS F Sport or the 2012 BMW 335i? What's better in terms of speed, acceleration, handling, reliability? Looking to buy either one soon.

I'm not sure how we are going to answer that. Neither car has been out long enough for even a test drive for most of us. Both cars just starting hit dealers about a week ago. My guess would be that the 335 would be the choice from a performance standpoint, and the Lexus for reliability. But that's obviously just a guess.

Aren't we talking about two different class of cars here? Thought the 5 series was the GS competitor...

It's a subjective matter so in this case, you just have to determine this by test driving both and then it's up to you to see it for yourself.

That's what I was thinking. The 335i compares closer to an IS350 in my opinion.

Well I was comparing the 2013 GS F Sport to the 2012 BMW 335i sedan because both are priced at roughly $55K.

I can help comment on this.

I have a 2008 BMW 335i and had a 2011 BMW 535i xdrive that I sold. In comparison, the new GS is a much better car in driving perspective than the BMW 535i without sports package by a decent margin. The 335i which feels stiffer and more planted is more fun to push it to the limits but for daily driving its tiring at times. The 2012 is the older 3 series and is not very smooth on bumps, pavements, and certain highways due to runflats so I would switch them out to regular tires like I did on my 2 BMWs. I am getting the new 2013 GS next month.

You are on a Lexus forum so everyone will say the GS350. They will also not like this post because I think their new car is not so great.

I will say the BMW, because I think the Lexus power train is complete rubbish in real-world use due to the lack of low-end torque.

It has the same problem as the 2010 Mercedes E550 - looks good on paper with lots of hp, but the lack of torque and poor transmission make the car difficult to enjoy.

Are torque curves (v. RPM) available for comparison? <-- Edit, realized after posting that the 535i has a turbo so should have better torque. Of course turbo's have their own issues. Still would like to see curves if available.

Also, what's wrong with the Lexus transmission?

Thanks,

Drove the '13 GS 350 last weekend and '12 BMW F30 335i a few days ago.

GS is more luxurious and a much comfortable interior.

335i is much more performance oriented with a sacrifice to the interior quality (e.g. leather etc.)

Exactly. I just looked at a couple of 335's in inventory in the Houston area (on line mean). Both of them listed for $56k, and I'm sure even at that the GS offers more features for the money. I have priced a 535 on line just last week. To get it equipped that way I want (and basically the same equipment as a GS with F-Sport and most of the good stuff) the 535 is $66k - nearly $10,000 more than a Lexus.

Take a look here and look up the dealer if you want to see how they are equipped....

Rubbish in real world use? That makes no complete sense. It's been a solid and bulletproof powertrain for Lexus since 2005. It has outperformed BMW 330 and 335's auto trans.

Its amazing all the bs people just spit out of their mouths when they have no clue whatsoever. It is annoying when people assume they know it all when in reality they don't know ****.

By the way....a fully loaded gs fsport is $58,xxx and a fully loaded 535i is $61,435. So there is about a $3000 difference in price, NOT $10,000. The f sport is just *** ugly unfortunately so I think my next car may be a 535.

Talk about people assuming they know everything when they don't! I have spent hours researching BMW 535's recently. You can find them with list prices over $70K.

Here is just a quick sampling...

I suggest you try pricing one that gets you M-Sport, ventilated seats, premium sound and other stuff that almost any other car that costs that much comes standard with - like heated seats, keyless entry etc.

Your driving is hardly the real world. You drive a modified $85k turbocharged V8 5 series and you tried to drive a stock base model $58k naturally aspirated V6 GS in a similar way and came out disappointed.

The powertrain is fine for real world use, but it will be lacking if you want to go out "sport driving" every time you drive it. If straight line speed and low end torque is your top priority, get an A6 3.0T. It has everyone else in the segment beat in that area.
