Protection is always good. You don't want to have any unexpected accidents.

My S5 has piano black inserts around the MMI ****. I use Pledge All Surface with a microfiber cloth to shine it up and keep a Swifter insert in the car to dust it off. No scratches after 14months, but there is a lot less of it than in the 4GS. Looks like I will really have to be careful when my 4GS arrives.

You can custom make 3M/Scotch guard clear tape to cover these areas, just like the bumper. But will lose the shiny of piano black.

For now, I keep a fine micro fiber cloth at all times in the glove compartment and use it to dust off dust and other particals that land on the surfaces of the piano surfaces. I think by minimizing dust and dirt, and other stuff it should help prevent fine scratches. When it comes time down the road and they are too scratched up, I think I will try to find a nice vinyl wrap to cover it.
