The problem with letting the tank get that low with some cars is that the fuel pump is inside the tank and actually cooled by the gasoline. Without any gas, the pump runs hotter and can burn up. I don't know if Lexus has a pump inside the tank or not, but I know other cars do.

I generally find that my 4GS has a lesser range than the other cars I've driven recently (EX35, IS300, Civics, CLS, etc). Not sure if the tank is smaller, or the warning light is just aggressive.

My mileage is generally not terrible (got 25mpg today on the hwy driving over 150 miles with 4 other people in the car and the AC going), so I don't think it's a mpg issue.

Yes, it's one of the many selections that you can display on the multi-information display that sits between your speedometer and tachometer. Just keep pushing the DISP button on your steering wheel until it comes up.

You can also view the cruising range on the main dashboard display by choosing the mpg tab for the side display

The GS 350 is equipped with a 17.4 gallon fuel tank. That is a very small tank given the MPG achieved by the vehicle.

For comparison:

Audi A6 3.0T: 19.8 gallons
BMW 535i: 18.5 gallons
Mercedes-Benz E350: 21.1 gallons

I suspect the fuel tank capacity was a casualty in the quest to lower the GS 350's overall weight. It may have also been a manufacturing concession for the battery pack on the GS 450h.
