By removing the stock intake tube you are also removing the built in sound creator. It is actually quieter and not the deep throaty sound that the stock intake tube creates. You do hear it when you get on it. There is an improvements on acceleration and a bit more responsive that is noticeable.

Couldn't one achieve this by simply getting the K&N drop-in air filter to get the best of both worlds (Sound and Performance)?

you won't get the sound with just the drop in filter. you need the aluminum/steel tube without any sort of rubber insulation.
