Guys, of course I can tell them apart. Many car makers have similar looking vehicles but the proportions are different, such as a 3 and 5 series.....
in this case, the size of the GS and ES are real similar I think and the side profile looks so similar, down to the rear window shape, the door mounted mirrors and door handles

One you buy for the wife (ES) and buy the GS for yourself as the driving dynamics are nothing alike I am sure

Of course WE can tell them apart, but they do look very similar, I would say that someone that is not familiar with Lexus would have a hard time telling them apart upon a quick glance. This isn't only a Lexus thing though as others have said, I for instance have mistaken new 3 series for 5 series and new 5 series for 3 series a bunch of times since the 3 came out, and I'm a pretty well versed car guy, just not a BMW guy.

I think we can all tell the difference but I saw these 2 cars sitting side-by-side in the dealer showroom and they really are very similar. The lines of the trunk area are almost identical. The roofline, side height, overall shape....these cars are very similar.

The ES design actually flows better with the GS being more edgy.

This is the first ES I could actually drive myself.

GS is longer, wider, and more aggressive but the new ES is nice as well. Ive seen one on the streets already but for some reason, it still has the Camry box-like stance and also the C-pillar is way different.

i no longer see camry style in an ES,,, even thogh i've never really saw camry in an ES except for the earlier models (early/mid 90's late 90's)but i do see a bigger HS250,,, just some subtle similarities.

This is the first ES I could see myself in, just not driving. I have driven the last ES and it simply is not a drivers car, it is not meant to be. Sure its nice looking but the new ES wont be fun to drive. I must say, I drive my 06 gs hard. I accelerate fairly aggresively, and push the handling of the care even more. The 19s make a real huge difference on the car, even compared to the optional 18s.

I should look up the stats on the es and gs in terms of size...they look so similar in size too

OK here are specs
width height wheelbase length
71.1 57.1 111.0 192.7 ES

72.4 57.3 112.2 190.7 GS

So GS is an inch wider and has an inch longer wheelbase but 2 inches shorter

The difference being that the new GS is a far better driver's car than the old GS.

Consider this : the old GS was never considered to be on par with the benchmark 5 series in terms of handling while many reviewers judge the new GS as superior to the 5 series in driving dynamics.

For that alone, IMO, I would overlook any minor styling inconsistencies just for the pure joy of driving the new GS. But that's just me. Your priorities are probably different.

I think it has to do with Lexus's current design language that they want the models to look like they're coming from the same group ; just like say-BMW(the BMW'S mostly look alike in some of the cars lines so you know what it is even if you see it from afar in the dark). I have no problem telling the difference, but I also see the similar lines between the two.

I'm more concerned the 4GS looks too much like the IS. Especially coming toward you. I wouldn't want my midsize luxo sedan looking like the entry level and small IS.

Ha, the GS looks nothing like the ES. Its sharper and more sportier looking. Even if I cross my eyes both cars look different. The new ES is bloaty looking and the rear is frumpy and the front is soft. The GS looks planted and flows nicely front front to rear. A perfect design. The old GS also was a nice design but needed good wheels to look good.
