More likely a cost saving measure.

Toyota is likely trying to produce the GS cheaply for the US market due to the unfavorable currency exchange rate. All of the Lexus line is produced in Japan, with the exception of the RX, which is built in Canada. I don't believe the RX suffers from the same cut-corners.

It's a shame that Toyota wants the GS to be a serious competitor, yet is trying to save a buck by having a manual trunk lid, using incandescent bulbs for turn signals, removing the fog lights from the F Sport trim level, sticking with the existing six-speed automatic transmission, etc. It's a good thing that excellent chassis tuning costs the same as poor chassis turning or else the GS might be devoid of one of it strongest features.

grab the inside handle and pull down (not hard) until the trunk is halfway or even almost closed. then take 2 digits and place them on the bottom of the license plate frame and push down. if i'm in the car and someone is putting something in the trunk (wife, kids) i'll get out and close it myself, i hate when people slam my trunk or my car doors for that matter.

Nope, no can do. I think it's the four new rubber pieces that they consider the "fix". I push, push hard (from the top of the lid) but it just bounces back up. I guess she wants to be slammed

you have real issues BN it could be the rubber piece, i didn't think of that. in some cases (owners with spoilers ) will have the hinges replaced also.

I have the same problem on my non-spoiler equipped GS. I bet the torque created by the electric motor, on models so equipped, has no problem overcoming the resistance posed by the rubber bumpers.

It’s a difficult one, if you slam it, it will bounce back up before the catch catches and if you don’t slam it hard enough it wont shut, so it may take a but of practice to get it right, I haven’t had any problems with mine, shuts with very little force, perhaps the strike plate may need slight adjustment?.

just called Lexus and they want me to bring the car in so they can replace the rubber and trunk hinges, hopefully this will stop the trunk from flying open... i don't have a problem closing it but when i open it i have to hold it until it's all the way open so that it doesn't fly open.

Mine doesn't fly. It pops open and stays there until I lift it up. Would you want to slam or live with the flying issue?

if i open with the trunk button on the fob or the trunk button on the trunk it doesn't fly up, but when i lift it slightly and let it go, it's flies open. i'd rather it not do either... slam or fly open. those are 2 unfair choices you're giving me there buddy. lol

Mine does the same thing. If I unlock it and lift it up slightly it rockets up. I'm afraid sometimes it'll fly off at the rate it's going lol.

I learned the hard way that mine flies open because I was washing the back window and my hand got caught under the edge of the trunk when it popped open. It hurt like a ****!

Aside from that, I don't see what the big deal is about the trunk. I travel almost every week so I am loading/unloading luggage all the time. I just pull down hard on the handle inside the trunk, make sure my hand isn't in the way and slam it. It is what it is. I don't need magic hands from inside the trunk closing it softly!
