Default 4GS Whine

I have a 4GS F Sport, about 2 months old. For the past few weeks, I've been hearing a whine that goes up and down with the RPMs. It almost sounds like the noise you would hear if you didn't ground an aftermarket radio correctly. Not sure if it was there when I drove it/bought it - I think I would have noticed it, but it seems to be getting louder, about as loud as the sound of the engine (unless I'm really getting on it and the resonator kicks in). I have a buddy with the exact same car (different color, bought it a couple of weeks after I did) and the whine on his sounds much quieter - still there, just quieter. I've spoken to the dealer twice and have ridden with a tech. We drove mine and a GS Luxury. In the Luxury Edition you hear it but it is quieter, which he says is added insulation (first time I'd heard of any difference like that between the two). The tech said it is likely the alternator which is triple wound to handle all of the electrical requirements and it's just the way the car is.

Anyone else experiencing this?

No... However the GS450h I did hear the whine of the hybrid drive system and it irritated my wife. Good luck on figuring things out.

I hear a slight whine that goes from high pitch to low pitch as I shut off my car but I don't notice it while driving.

I drive these 4GS's on a daily basis at the dealership. I know exactly the whine you are talking about. It is louder on some cars than others, but i can't think of a single one that hasn't whined at least a little. I think it's normal, but the tone of the whine is definitely linked to RPM, so maybe it is an alternator or something else driven on the belt. I also don't really notice a difference between Luxury, Base, or F Sport models.

I experience the whine too. I have a 2013 GS F-Sport AWD. I find it annoying and mostly hear it when accelerating. Told the dealer about it and they agreed it's there, but, there's not any fix for it at this time. They don't want to start taking things apart which I understand. It sounds reasonable that it could be coming from the alternator? I hope someone at Lexus is looking into this. It's an issue that a luxury vehicle which has all the noise dampening tech built into it can make this noise.

I think its the way the driveline is supposed to sound, it reminds me of other much higher performance vehicles.

GS engineers employing a Intake Sound Creator so the whine come at a bonus?

Digging up an older thread here but wanted to see if anyone had their issue addressed. I have the same whine and it's quite annoying. I start to hear it around 1500+ RPM and right around 50 MPH is where I hear it the worst.

I had a similar issue in my '09 Pontiac G8 GT and it turned out to be the transmission mount. It was causing a vibration at certain RPMs that created the same exact sound. Honestly, it's BS that Lexus is simply saying "It's normal" -- No, it's not normal and for a $50K+ car, this shouldn't be the case. I guess if enough of us complain, they will get a bulletin out there.

Aside from that the car is amazing, so it's hard to complain...lol

Thanks a lot guys
