PCS AKA Pre Collision System
#2
Someone posted here a few weeks ago that it braked hard as he was changing lanes on the freeway when he had lots of room infront of him. He said it almost caused an accident instead of avoiding one.

i had a pleasant experience with my PCS/DRCC/LKA. set the CC at 60 and set the PCS at level#1 (there are 3 levels). tried to switch lanes (LKA activated) and felt the steering torque nudge the wheel in the opposite direction back towards the center of the lane. a car in front of me slowed down and as i got within 15ft. the lexus engine speed decreased and then the car began braking on its own (my foot was not on the gas or brake pedal). mycar almost came to a complete stop... not fast but gradual, just enough to get your attention in case you weren't paying attention i.e. looking forward or worst... asleep. they're cool features although i don't use them much. BSM, HUD, PA i use everyday. haven't tried the Driver Attention Monitor, don't think i will either.

However, I've never experienced the Pre-collision system in action in over 4,100 miles of driving and hopefully I never will since that would mean I was either in a collision or the car thought I was close enough to having one to activate. So far it has done nothing, which is what I would expect it to do.

DRCC brakes on its own and accelerates in the link with trafic (dynamic cruise control), but when it comes to PCS, it only activates when you are surely going to hit something. Meaning it should not activate when you are driving car on your own and not using radar control.

PCS activates only before collision :-).

The radar cruise works very well. If you also have the LKA turned on, it nudges you to keep you in your lane.
The pre-collision system is a bit of a disappointment - it has not kicked in yet, and I'm not about to push it closer. Our Volvo 2012 S80 has a far better system in that regard. It provides a visible warning on the windshield that gets brighter as you get closer, and eventually an audible alert. The next step would be automatic braking. And this on a car at least $10k less. I take comfort that this system will reduce the speed of a collision, but don't expect it will do anything to prevent one.
