Gear holding in 4GS F-sport
Hello all,
I have a GS F-sport. Seems like every time I push it beyond 4k rpm and when trying to slow back down, the tranny will hold its gear and stay at one rpm for at least a few seconds then drop violently. This happens in S modes. Is that normal?? Has anyone else experience this?
Thanks for any feedback.

Yes this is normal in "S" mode. Think of a normal standard shift car. If you are on it in 3rd gear and you down shift for a corner, hit the corner, gas it to the next apex your still in second holding it in gear so you can sty on the power right? Your car is thinking that thats how you want to drive it "Sporty" or in "S" mode.

Yep, it's normal. I know it happens going straight as well as in corners, so I always find myself hitting the Drive Select button and going back into "D" mode. It takes a while, but the RPMs will come back down. Not my favorite feature about the car. I've had other cars that did rev-matching and they never kept the RPMs up that long.

That's a feature, it's to hold gears as one would with a manual transmission. It's like an automated heel-and-toe style downshift. With a manual, you'd downshift before the corner, hold the gear and modulate the throttle, and potentially hold the gear until another upshift or downshift becomes required based on the proximity and type of the next corner or engine RPM. In aggressive driving, this function is appreciated.
Some clamored that Lexus needed to become more sporty. They sure did with the transmission tuning on the GS. Personally, I like it. That's why this is my first Lexus.

I first experienced this when I was merging onto another freeway and had to slow down due to slower traffic. I felt that the car wasn't responding fast enough when I stepped on the gas to speed up. Many say normal but it felt unsafe for me. I'm wondering if it would still down shift fast and hold like this if we were in M mode. Anyone tried this?

Yep normal, this is the same way it feels in my BMW when in sport mode it holds the revs if I push down and have to slow down due to traffic, sounds the gear is stuck, really isn't unsafe as the computer is thinking but if you were driving a stick shift and you downshifted it would sound the same.
