Default 5k Service

My 5k service is coming up soon and I was wondering how successful any of you guys were of getting the dealership to change the oil. I know it isn't done until 10k but with the engine breaking in period, there is usually metal shavings in the oil. I was hoping that I can get them to throw in an oil change for free.

If you guys were successful in the LA/OC area, can someone tell me the dealership you got it done at.

Many thanks.

In Canada there is a service appointment at 1500 km (900 mi) where there is wash and the interior is cleaned and questions are answered. At 8000 km (5000 mi) the oil is changed and the procedure from the 1500 km service is repeated.

I know there is a general belief that the oil should be changed within the first 2000 km life of a new car, to rid any unwanted material in the oil. I am not sure this need applies to Lexus vehicles. I have changed the oil on at least 3 new Toyota vehicles myself and found nothing in the oil except for oil. I did the same for a Chrysler product I owned many decades ago and did have chunks of metal in the oil!

I'm planning on changing the break-in oil in my wife's GS450h after 2500 miles. Then, I'll let the full synth go for 7,500 miles to reach 10k total. At that point, I'll change the oil and have the old stuff tested and then decide whether to run 7.5k or 10k intervals going forward. I wouldn't let the price of an oil change drive your decision-making. If worse comes to worst, just go to a Toyota dealer or even a Jiffy Lube (your GS is still a Toyota and the boys KNOW how to do oil changes on Toyos!) Good luck.

They'll change the oil at 5k, I had them do it. They will however charge you for it...which is fine.

I never expected them to change the oil for free. Its a synthetic oil change and just the oil itself isn't cheap.

I trust Toyota's engineers. I'm waiting until the second service to get an oil change.

I do too, but I figured what the hell...I'll go to 10 changes after the 10k service.

They probably didn't realize that it only calls for a change at 10k...

The irony of this thread is that in another car forum I frequent it swings the other way; Where other people will tsk-tsk posters for changing the "magic" moly-boosted break-in oil too early. They are backed up by a small snippet in the owner's manual that warns not to perform the 1st oil change prior to the maintenance minder.

I think in reality, as long as you are not at either extreme (first oil change way too soon / way too long(past the warning light)), I don't think it's going to matter, except to your pocketbook.
