Lexus GS300h (2013 Shanghai Auto Show)
Lexus Introduces GS 300h At Shanghai Motor Show
GS range expanded with all-new GS 300h featuring highly efficient full hybrid powertrain to compete at the heart of its segment
2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine with fuel consumption targeted below 5.0 l/100 km resulting in class-leading CO2 emissions below 110g/km
Additional advanced safety features include color Head-Up Display (HUD) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) function, which is newly equipped with Blind Spot Monitor (BSM).
Today Lexus unveiled the all-new GS 300h. Thanks to its outstanding environmental performance and its engine displacement positioned right at the heart of its segment (*), the new GS 300h will play a key role in expanding Lexus’ segment share, with a special focus on corporate fleets. The new GS 300h will be launched by the end of 2013 in various global markets, including China, Europe, Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.
The GS 300h is a front engine rear-wheel drive premium sedan equipped with a two-motor full hybrid system featuring a 2.5l 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with a D-4S direct injection technology. With CO2 emissions targeted at below 110g/km, this powertrain is one of the most efficient in its class.
Advanced Safety
The GS 300h is equipped with an even more extended range of advanced safety features, adding up on the existing package already available on the GS line up. New features include a redesigned full-color Head-Up Display (HUD) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) function, alarming the driver in case of approaching vehicles when backing out of a parking spot.
The new GS 300h is also equipped with full LED fog lamps, which is new for hybrid models.
The Lexus GS range now includes the GS 300h, the GS 450h, the GS 250, the GS 350 and the GS 350 AWD. Launched in the spring of 2012, the model’s total global sales achieved 47,787 units last year, almost 6 times more than in 2011.
(*) The Lexus GS belongs to the Executive, mid-size luxury or E-premium segment, depending on regional automobile market classification.

Wow. Not a bad idea. I like them expanding the line tgo give more options (Mercedes is doing something similar I believe). I am a bit curious how having two hybrids in the same product will work (or work against itself). They may not even offer both hybrids in the same market. Let's see how this works out.

The GS300h will be the bread and butter sub-model in the GS line-up. It will supplant the GS250 in most international markets. In the US, it will slot under the GS350, giving the US a 3 engine GS line-up : GS300h, GS350, GS450h.
Expect the GS300h to be to the GS like the 520i/528i is to the 5 series, the A6 2.0T to the A6 etc.

Simple. Those who want more performance will end up with the GS450h. I expect the GS450h to make a very small proportion of GS sales similar to how V8s in BMW/Audi/MB/Hyundai/Jaguar sell compared to their 4/6 cylinder mid-size sedans.

It really depends on how they market it.

I get what you're saying, but from what I've heard (I haven't driven it), the GS450h isn't that "performance". Yes, it has marginally better straight line figures, but the transmission isn't suited for "enthused" driving. As such, I'm not sure the GS450h can truly be a v8 competitor. It's just a faster hybrid, really. Which is fine.

If they brought that car here...it would sell like hotcakes...way moreso than the 450h.
As for the 450h, my issue would be the CVT, I don't like CVTs. Several reviews of the 450h have mentioned the CVT being an issue when it comes to spirited driving.

People buy no hybrid for spirited driving. May be next decade.

What exactly of a CVT don't you like when a computer program imposes "gears" upon it? Are you aware that the GS450h Drive mode with paddles has D1-D5 selectable "gears?" And Shift mode with paddles has S1-S6 selectable "gears?" I don't think you know what you're talking about; at least the other poster admits he hasn't driven the car! Do you guys review books and movies you haven't read or seen either? Or do you just take the opinion of others in deciding what you think?
