I believe uninsured motorist insurance covers only medical type cost not body damage - that will be covered by your collision coverage less your deductible. Many years ago my underage son had an at fault accident and all he got cited for was not having a licene "in his possession". And to my surprise my insurance paid right up for both the liablity and collision claims.

At the same time I have known people to have their cars impounded and towed for no current registration or insurance even without an accident. If they impounded just for no insurance the impound lots would be overflowing.

And even more years ago I had an accident with an uninsured driver and after a few months I received a letter of the DMV saying they had the car and I could claim it if I wanted to. Maybe I should have taken it - it was a 55 Chevy.
