Navigation update thread 2
Sorry to bother y'all with this but I just purchased my gs350 last week and they state the navigation update is available there and I told them to hold one copy for me...they say I have to purchase it for 170 plus installation..which is complete bull because they should have installed that on my car when I purchased it...
Does this nav update anything for my firmware or does it just update maps? I'm trying to see if I should even bother paying 200 if they make me pay it...

I went through this when I bought mine.
Here's how it works. Lexus' policy is to have the latest nav update installed when the car is built. They do not update the nav software on vehicles that are on the lot when an update comes out. I bought mine in December, and it was built in July. Update came out in October, mine has the old maps because thats what was current in July. I asked for them to be updated and was told no.
The maps are $170...but the install cost is stupid high, and you cannot do it yourself you need their computer interface. It was going to cost me over $400 to upgrade the maps...so I didn't.

Yeah I wouldn't pay that when its already a 2013. Its just a map update.
I can certainly understand the assumption that its a new car it should have the latest maps though, I felt the same way.

They don't do that.
I think Lexus has really gone the wrong way with these updates. Used to be you bought a CD for $250 and could do it yourself. Now they're so afraid people are going to pirate the data they've developed this arduous process for installing the data. It sucks for the dealers because they take the brunt of customer's ire when they find out it takes 1.5 hours of labor to install the already $170 map data, but they have made the process literally take that long and requires expensive equipment so the dealers can't afford to do the update for free to make their customers happy.
Just stupid.

An annual map update I won't do annually...Maybe every couple of years. UNLESS it includes updated functionality.

After waiting 2 hours and 15 minutes, they gave me a loaner and they said they would call me when it is done. They have now had the car for 24 hours, and it still isn't done.
First they told me the maps were loading. Then they told me they needed to update their laptop software in order to load the new 13.1 update. They told me it would take hours to download, and that I had to leave the car. I called them at lunch today, and they said they didn't realize what the USB key was for, and that they finally had the maps loading. It is 4 hours since the last call and its still not done.
It's asinine that Lexus makes you go to the dealer for Nav updates, when the dealer doesn't know how to do a Nav update.

LOL, I wish it took only took 1.5 hours to do. I have 8.1 maps, so I went in to buy the new 13.1 update. The dealer told me it would take an hour.

Sounds to me that they've messed something up and need time to fix it. I would request to look at the car. 24 hours to update maps? Something is not right.....

They didn't mess up my car. They had problems putting the software onto their laptop.
I went by at hour 26 and asked them how much longer. They had no idea. I told them to unplug the car.
I asked to talk with the Service Manager. I let them know in no uncertain terms that I wasn't happy with Lexus making the dealer-only installation, then having the dealer be clueless about how to do a Nav upgrade.
After talking with both the SA and the Service Manager, it truly seemed like they had never done a 2010-2012 Nav update. This doesn't seem possible, but they really had no idea how to update the laptop, then the car.
So, I would like to tell how great an improvement the 13 maps are over the 08, but I can't. After the dealer having my car for 26 hours, I left with my 08 maps.

I dont think that update is worth it just like Sam said unless there is firmware, its not like they missed a whole city, or they build a brand new town and we need to know.
