Thats a tough one...the BMW is the pinnacle car in this segment, but I think in a lot of ways the GS is the better car. Ultimately I probably would choose the BMW because I've never had one.
BUT...they are not the same price. Optioned similarly the BMW is $10,000 more.

Well I'm sure you're aware of the answer you'll get here lol. The only thing that lured me towards the BMW was the infotainment system but once starting up the GS and taking it for a spin, I forgot what BMW was. The GS wins hands down in every category I compared the two cars in.

They aren't as far apart in cost as I thought. When you take into account the free maintenance, you're only talking about $3k in sticker price. I agree there are a few variances in options, but nothing that makes that big a difference to me.

Make sure you really are comparing them feature for feature. The GS has a lot of features like adaptive seating and things like that which are unusual options on a BMW. When you really spec out a BMW similar to a Lexus thats when the price difference kicks in.

An AWD F Sport comes out to $59,382.
A 535i M Sport X Drive optioned comparably is $70,915 You need to add in a lot of options to get it to where an F-Sport is, adaptive drive, multi contour seats, ventilated and heated seats, sunshade, paddle shifters. That price is with standard paint and interior. If I want something as innocuous as "Space Grey" its $550.
If you want anything as dynamic color wise inside as flaxen or cabernet you have to pony up another $2,500 for a BMW Individual interior.
If you don't want those features on the F Sport...you don't need an F Sport. You can get a Premium package GS and have them swap the bumpers and there ya go.

Features for $ the GS wins hands down. If ultimate performance is your prime target the BMW is better but it is more money as well. Drive both and see which works and what you value more. I feel the BMW is a better car if fully optioned but it is a good bit more. I have a GS and love it, and have had many many BMW's. I still have a lot of love for BMW but Im also super impressed with my GS.

For $70k I would probably go for a fully optioned Audi A7. Audi has actually made it to #4 in reliability in the JD Power surveys. Lexus is #1. BMW is still way down the list. Not having to spend a lot of time at the dealership for service is a big factor for me.

When we were looking into new car options my wife and I considered both the 535 w/ m sport with the GS F sport. Weighing the reliability and value, the GS won hands down. Plus we didn't see ourselves as "BMW people".

when my wife and i were in the market for our cars, we looked at all types of cars in the luxury line (audi, bmw, lexus, mercedes) Lexus by far was the best value for the money and the most reliable of the options we had.

the LCI(revised) 535i m kit is pretty nice, i knew the revision was coming for the 5 series so didn't even look into it when i was getting my gs350 f sport last dec.
if i was in the market now, i would definitely check it out. the new LED headlights look sick plus the interior refreshments as well and the ///M steering wheel!!

Dollar for Dollar I would buy the 535i BUT their not the same. I was down to the GS or BMW when I chose the GS because for what I wanted the BMW was 10k more AND it didn't lease as well, I didn't love my local dealer and they wouldn't come off MSRP nearly as much as Lexus. Couple that with BMW low balling my trade and it basically forced me to leave the BMW brand after years of loyalty
Just my 2 cents...

I guess a better comparison would be the GS hybrid vs 535. That would be a tougher call. Fsport vs 535? Fsport wins just because of the value for money, unless you don't care about money, then it's pretty much a wash.

i feel like i can answer this question better than most because i owned a 12 535i M sport, then a 13 GS350 luxury and now a 13 550i Msport. MSRP is only one part of the equation. most people dont realize that BMW's lease very well. very well. they have inflated residuals and the money factor can be decreased by applying refundable security deposits. for example for my current lease my MF is .00076. the car MSRP was right over $74K and selling price was $66K. my payment with 15K/miles a year with nothing down but inception fees and refundable deposit is $760 + tax. for comparison i looked at a $62K porsche cayman and for the same money down i would be around $900/month for a car that has an MSRP of $12K less.
now in terms of the actual cars, both were great. the lexus biggest downfall is the engine. this is the same engine since 2006. it lacks low end torque, thats why i switched to the 550i (wanted that 460 lb/ft tq). maybe now with the 8spd transmission it feels better, but they real need get some turbo/supercharger in there. otherwise they're very comparable. the HUD on the BMW is amazing, not sure how the GS350's is. both are great cars
