I've done it with tires mounted to the wheels too. Make sure to bring large enough trash bags to put them into and cover the seats with old blankets or sheets too just in case.
why not do them 2 at a time? or two in rear seat, one in passenger and one on trunk. I think you can fit 2 in the trunk (just make sure you have a rubber mat between eash so it doesn't rub the wheels).

I was told it can handle it in my car although I didn't see it being able to happen. I used my mothers truck without her knowing. You probably can get away with two tires in trunk and two in back seat.
