I know on my wife's 2011 RX, if the key FOB battery is totally dead, you remove the valet key and hold the FOB close to the start button, and the vehicle will start. I assume the GS' also have the ability?

If you happen to be caught with a dead key fob battery, you can just hold the [intact] key fob next to the Start button and it will start...but I would not wait for that to happen. It's too easy and inexpensive to not replace the batteries every couple of years.
