Guys, let me just stress how difficult it is for the phone to pickup the tone of the exhaust. While in the car you can hear the exhaust CLEARLY, throaty too! 
Been trying to capture my RWD JoeZ exhaust and the only thing that worked was taping the phone to the outside of car (near license plate) and driving around a bit. I prayed that my $500 iphone wouldnt just get ripped from the rear (especially during the highway run!), but since I didnt have a gopro with an external car mount I had to be resourceful.
No videos can do this exhaust justice!

You can buy the sticky 3M pads for the Go Pro for activities like recording exhaust sounds! They are fairly cheap, Found a bunch for under $5
Although some of these are curved, so you just have to find the ones that come with all flat ones or only use the flat ones. I've used this many times and it works great!!
