I don't think the 3 Series is especially noisy.

In any event the car used is meaningless. As long as the same car is used to test each tire.

It is. I drive one and extensively test drove 4 more, with a microphone next to me A design flaw made the wind noise very noticeable and weight saving brought the road noise. But don't take my word for it, see the longest thread (by far) on the 3 Series forum, at 40 something pages: it's ALL about road and wind noise.
If that's not enough, most of the professional reviews mention 3 things consistently: great engines, great tranny and an excessive amount of road and wind noise.

Noise is the biggest reason I'm dropping the 3 for the GS. Second is value for the money. I'll miss the technology, engine, transmission and great user interface.
