I wonder if the other person knew you guys were racing on public roads...he might have been in Eco mode haha
A lot of other factors need to be considered, such as number of passengers in the car. If he was driving a 2014 or 2015 with the 8-speed, then he is probably driving the faster car.

My 2010 3GS is 6 speed; I still have it - will not renew the lease on my wife's chuckable 3IS.
The 4GS's 3.5 was tweaked a little for a few more bhp etc.
Is the 8 speed 4GS quicker and more economical then the original 6 speed 4GS?

the 8 speed imho is just for gas mileage. i have driven gs350 6 speed vs 8 speed (and i have 8 speed now), the 6 speed is more punchy and better reaction imho
but in a race this shouldn't really matter that much. you should be holding gears and you shouldn't get into 6th or higher (still can't imagine the speed). 3hp difference to me is meaningless, just the deviation from engines to engines in the same year / car could yield more difference than that. i had the 08 gs350 and now 15 gs350, to me both cars are very close in speed imho

My 2010 felt way more responsive than our 2014. It may not have been faster flat out through the years, but it sure was a lot more responsive in real-world driving. I think they neutered the responsiveness of the newer versions in the name of better gas mileage ratings.

could be the 8 speed. what i did was put the car in manual mode, select my gear, and play with the throttle. car came alive much better. that kind of told me the 8 speed makes the difference -- always hunting gears. considering i had that feeling way back with my ls460 that had more hp and tq, i am not surprised about it on the gs350

The pedal detent on the 8 speed fixed all the downshift issue. My 8 speed in Sport mode is quick, especially when shifting manually. It's fun to mess around on the freeway, this car has a lot of power but normally once I get to 80 I let the other guy go. The car however just wants to keep going.
