Default anyway to update firmware without updating maps?

My ipod wakes up only 60% of the time when I start the car engine. For the other 40% i have to disconnect and reconnect the usb cable for a link to establish.

I read somewhere that a firmware update can help but a firmware update seems to be bundled with a map update which I am reluctant to pay. Does anyone know of a place where I can search for TSB of similar issue?

If cable is bad then it should not power on consistently.

My ipod connection was inconsistent too. I changed the usb cable and it fixed the issue. Sometimes the usb connection to the car usb port is not tight and kinda loose which caused my problem. But once i changed the usb cord which has a tighter connection everything was fine.
