That's incorrect. The 2014 has the same 18s as the 2013 Luxury, with a slightly darker finish. They changed to the 19s with the luxury package in 2015.

I've driven both. The 6 speed is better for this car (IMO) because of where the powerband is on the 2GR-FSE engine. The 8 speed keeps you churning from lower to upper RPMs several times. The 6 speed keeps you around the peak power band more often. This engine makes little torque until 3500-4000 rpm's. She's a happy revver. On the other hand, the 8 speed will net you 1mpg more than the 6 speed. Personally mpg's is not why I bought this car.

I recently got my late year 2013 GS off a lease with almost 2 years left on the factory warranty. I cross shopped the A6 as well. IMO, this is a better driver's car and will be a better value over the years. You have the right idea... Peak depreciation happens at about 3 years, after that it levels off... so I got a $60k car for half price... only $27k miles on it. Can't go wrong. Good luck.
