Which is surprising since at launch the GS was considered the best option out there even over the fat heavy, King 5 Series. Lexus GS design for this gen was followed by the CTS, great handling, extreme styling, better material quality, the list goes on. However it goes to show you, you can build a better mid size saloon car, but without that BMW badge it just wont sell. Only time it will sell is if you price it like a Buick, caz every BMW-esque buyer although has new found respect of the brands direction, still treats it as an overpriced Toyota (regardless of how flawed that statement is).

That's right, those same people would rather choose a stripper BMW or Benz over a fully loaded Lexus any day. The less GS on the road the better for me anyway, so it's considered a rare car.
Everybody here has stripper BMWs and Benz, they're like Corollas and Civics now.

Hopefully Lexus is looking into other ways of making their cars faster besides the old-fashion turbos (using exhaust) or superchargers, which obviously haven't been the most reliable ways of increasing power. Maybe Lexus will release electric turbos...or maybe a new hybrid powertrain where electric motors handle the lower end and the NA engine takes over for the upper end.
Most likely Lexus is going to play it safe and wait for others to do it first, then perfect it.

Historically, the Japanese are not known for innovation. Just perfecting what has already been done.

Back in 1989, Lexus was the first to come out with metal-resin-metal noise absorbing metal sandwiches to make the LS so much quieter than the S Class and 7 Series.
Lexus used front double wishbone suspension, while a decade ago, the C Class, E Class, 3 Series and 5 Series only used front cheap single lower link MacPherson strut suspension.
Only the current model C, E, 3 & 5 have front double wishbone suspension.
Lexus have their pioneering gasoline-electric hybrids, and the pioneering gear-driven eCVT transmissions which can handle far more torque than the traditional belt driven CVT gearboxes.
Lexus air con systems can be adjusted to 0.5 degree Celsius, where many other brands can only be adjusted to 1.0 degree Celsius.
I can't remember completely, but Lexus was one of the first to use single 10" and single 12" subwoofers in the rear parcel shelf in the ES and LS respectively, and back then, Benz and Beamer just had plain Jane 2x elliptical 6"x9" mid-bass in their rear parcel shelves.
Formula 1 racing cars are presently small capacity electric turbocharged gasoline-electric kinetic hybrid engines.
So hopefully, Lexus will eventually jump onto electric turbos, and combine that with their electric hybrid designs.
Hopefully the next gen 5GS can get optional air suspension too.
Is air suspension in the current gen LS reliable? Has Lexus got that sorted out?
They must sort out air suspension and reliability, before the midsize GS can option air suspension...

The polarizing front end of the Lexus which has been pretty much universally panned (except on Llexus sites such as this) hasn't helped. Infiniti has been way behind for years.

They're not going to release a redesigned GS in 2018. It just had a major redesign. 2004-2012 for the 3GS. 2012-2019/2020 is more likely for the 4GS.
