It is most like some sort of RF-ID/NFC technology where the car emits a pulse of radio energy that is enough to energize the circuits in the FOB for a response. It is completely passive for the FOB at that point.

Many older cars had transponders embedded in the key that had to be paired with the car's ECU, and wouldn't start without said transponder. I imagine you'd find a transponder in almost any older key that has a chunk of plastic around the key's base.

There’s an induction coil inside the key fob. When you hold a key fob with a dead or missing battery near the key logo on your steering column, the key fob is energized by an induction coil inside the steering column (similar to how wireless phone charging works).
When the key fob is energized, it allows the vehicle to read the fob and allows you to start the vehicle.

A little for info from some Google searching:
This coil enables you to start the car using induction when you touch the start stop button using your key. The start/stop button houses the other half of the induction loop, when you touch the button using the fob, a loop is closed and enough energy is generated in the fob to transmit its codes.
Almost all manufacturers use either "induction charging" or a "hidden slot to insert key" to bail the driver out of a flat battery situation.
