Default Cracked Windshield

Hello,

On my way home from Vegas last week, my windshield cracked. Luckily my wife won a little bit, so it won't hurt as much.

Just wanted to ask the group. Do you think it would be better to go through Safelite (insurance recommended) or the dealership for replacement? I will be requesting OEM glass of course.

Was the crack from a rock? My windshield cracked but started from the edge on the driver's side. Covered under warranty as stress fracture. They tried to fight it at first, but couldn't prove it as there were no divots consistent with a rock chip.

How were you able to fight it? I don't see any chips or impact marks from a rock, so I'm thinking it could be a defect. Did you notice any difference after replacement?

I've used Safelite before on an Accord. It did the job, but I didn't really like it. They cut some upholstery in the process of the installation

Safelite will never touch one of my cars again. I had them replace a driver's side window on a previous car. They scratched up the door jam, tore some upholstery on the door, and scratched some trim. When I pointed it out to the manager, he got mad, then told me it didn't matter because the car was a POS (it wasn't, but even if it was, it wouldn't matter).

I think i read about the stress fracture on this forum, and then researched it more online. Stress fractures will always start at the edge and move inward. I took it to lexus and then did the "pen" test to see if it got stuck. If it gets stuck, they will say it's a rock chip. Stuck = divot. Mine didn't get stuck, even tho the SA said it did. The service manager came out with a flashlight to inspect it, and I asked him where the pen would get stuck at, before the SA could tell him anything.

The manager covered it under warranty. In the end, Lexus Corp. pays them back for all the work anyways. But again, the crack has to start at the edge.

I haven't noticed any issue after replacement. It was replaced with OEM Lexus glass at the Lexus dealership. ONly thing I had to pay out of pocket was re-tinting my front windshield.

If you have the winter package, the windshield comes with a high intensity defroster. Can you get the one with this feature if it's not OEM?

I just had my windshield replaced. Bought OEM windshield online for about $720 shipped, took it to the dealer and paid $180 labor to get it installed, had to pay another $20 for the "rain sensor tape"

I had a terrible experience with Safelite installing a windshield on a Lexus. They did $800 worth of damage and denied it was their fault. I had to threaten a lawsuit to get them to pay for the damage. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. Insurance companies like them because they are CHEAP.

I been through 2 windshields. Went to safelite for both BUT make sure you get a Lexus one! They tried to give me a bogus one and they said "insurance wont pay for Lexus"... I called Gieco and they said, you can put whatever you want on it...Safelite taking to make money on the massive markup on their in house products

Thanks for the input everyone!

Thankfully, Lexus is going to cover the glass under warranty.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to look out for when I get the car back?

Side note: Lexus Leased cars must be returned with the OEM glass.
You can be charged for non-standard replacement pieces such as
wheels, radios, glass etc. Pretty standard boilerplate text in all lease
agreements.
