I had a new 2004 BMW 325i for a few years. In two years (under warranty) I had:
1) Ignitor coil recall
2) Window regulator replacement
3) CPU replacement due to mirrors being possessed and moving randomly as well as other gremlins
4) Brake pads/rotors replaced at 10K miles (I don't drive hard and brake pads usually last 30k+ miles on every other car I have owned).
When I was in the market last, it was choosing between a loaded 535i M-Sport and a GS350 F-Sport and ended up going with the GS350 because of my past negative experience with BMW and positive experience with my wife's Lexus GX470.
When I test drove the BMW, the check engine light came on and that definitely did not help in building my confidence BMW has 'improved'. The salesman gave me this 'oh damn' look when I pointed out the check engine light was lit.
