I agree that over oiling would cause it. In my case, though, there were no issues until I took a long trip (~500 miles) where it literally rained the entire time. I don't know for a fact that the rain caused the oil to migrate, but that's my hypothesis.

Oiling the filter is a pain in the *** and is not worth the hassle. The ROI just isn't there for these lifetime filters. Buy an OEM one and replace as needed.

And if there’s an actual increase in performance, my butt-dyno can’t tell, so there’s no good reason to use those oiled filters. Unless of course, the mod-bug has bitten you and you’ve JUST GOT TO DO IT!

I just like the sound of my Takeda CAI. Sounds so much nicer than stock. Don't care about any HP "gains". I think Takeda has both oiled (blue) and dry (gray) filters? I have the oiled one, only put 10K miles on it so still a ways way away from 50K cleaning.

Not the exhaust... the cold air intake. Sounds great when stepping on it, quite as can be when cruising. I have not touched the exhaust nor do I plan to. This is a quiet luxury car and I am keeping it that way lol.

The main advantage is that it can be cleaned and reused for the life of the vehicle. Supposedly...high-flow, low-restriction air filters also marginally increase throttle response, engine performance, and fuel economy due to more air assisting with combustion, but I haven't noticed a significant difference. I didn't drive my car long enough or hard enough with the paper filter to compare. It might be slightly more noticeable when more components of the air intake system is changed.

Interesting. I am taking a ~300 mile road trip in the GS at the end of the month and it is entirely possible it will rain during that time too. I wonder if your filter experienced some soak from the rain coming thru the air inlet if it really rained at 65+mph for 7-8 hours.
