I ran Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in all my Lexus' on a 5K interval. My father in law is a mechanic and I asked him about the longevity of oil before.

I just don't feel safe going all the way to 10K. When I took my 16 GS in for the 5K service I was shocked when they said the oil change is at 10K.

As someone mentioned above, the ability for the oil to protect the engine diminishes around 7-8K on the M3 that was tested.

I must say I am really tempted to just change the oil myself prior to the 10K.

Another point on why BMW offered the 15K oil change is because that decision was likely based on input from engineers, bean counters and marketing. Bean counters love it because that saves BMW money since they offer free oil changes for 50K miles or 4 years. Marketing loves it because it's a selling point over the competition since less maintenance required is a positive in most people's eyes. Engineers were likely saying "nein nein.... engine longevity will suffer but we'll be OK during the warranty period".

As I posted earlier, BMW now recommends a 10K oil change interval. Why would they lower it from 15K to 10K unless they found that engine longevity suffered with the 15K oil change?

In the old days and oil was from the earth and inserted it an engine it would break down and not offer as much protection and needed to be changed every 3500-5000 miles.
In the modern days and Synthetic Oil the oil is much better. Synthetic oil doesn't break down until it reaches about 400 degree Fahrenheit. Your engine has major issues if the oil gets to 400 F deg.
So you should be able to run your oil for a very long time. But 10,000-15,000 is plenty, but you can save a little bit by not changing it at 5k.
For both types of oil they are only filtered at idle, any RPM"s higher than idle and the filter is by-passed. The paper material can not handle a fluid as thick as oil at a high preassure.
So your Fully-Synthetic only can go 15,000+ miles. Because growing up we changed oil at 3500-5000 miles it seems bad to let it go 10,000 miles.
It would be ok to change your filter every 5k and replace the quart/quart and a half when you change the filter and change the oil every 3rd filter.

That is the Engineer/Chemistry side of it.

PS- I had a BMW 650i and was freaked out when they told me the oil change was every 15k, so I did some research and this is what I discovered.
I also put 160,000 miles on it before trading it for the GS 350 and fully expect to get that many miles and more from the GS 350.

Also, BMW lowered the mile between oil changes from 15k to 10k because (On the 650i) they went from a normal V8 to a Twin Turbo V8.
I would NOT recommend going 10k on an oil change with a Turbo motor. The oil in the turbo will get very close if not exceed 400 degrees.

Oil begins to breakdown @ 270 degrees F. If a engine is started & turned off before fully warming up to operating temp it accumulates condensation (water) if it is not evaporated by heat it dulutes the oil. Oil change interval recommendations higher than 10,000 miles are environmentally motivated.
