Hi all,

I've been trying to decide which car to pick up and I'm stuck between the Hyundai Genesis 3.8 and the GS350. 2015 Genesis (base model) is $29K with 5k miles and the 2014 GS350 (luxury package) is CPO with 35k miles for $31k. I am in NYC. I like the Genesis exterior more (Lexus looks outdated) but the Lexus has a better interior. I'm planning on keeping the car for ~5 years and am concerned with long-term reliability and eventual re-sale value. Any advice would be appreciated, especially from members who have driven / considered the Genesis. Thanks.

I had the GS and have driven several Genesis/G80 models. The GS has a better interior, the Genesis is a softer ride (more like the LS), resale will be better on the GS, but resale on the 4GS hasn't been great, down the line though people will always pay a certain amount for a nice used Lexus. Reliability? My guess is both will be fine, but that's more a known quantity with the Lexus.

Comes down to it do you want a sportier car or a softer car?

Genesis offers 10 years/100 Miles warranty I don't think any company can beat that. Stick with Genesis you'll be fine.

Also, he is looking at a used 2015 Hyundai Genesis. He doesn't get any of that, you need one of the 100% Genesis badged G80s or G90s to get all of those perks.

While it's basically the same car unfortunately he would not get those perks.

I very heavily considered the '16 Genesis before settling on my GS. I'm not entirely sure of the deltas between their '15 and '16 models.

I've got to say, the Genesis was a smooth ride, that 3.8L V6 puts out very nice torque and handles that huge vehicle well. The interior on the Genesis was quite comfortable, though I only considered the Tech & Ultimate package variants with the upgraded interior.

If you need the space, especially for rear-seat passengers, perhaps give more consideration to the Genesis.

So why'd I go for the GS? The Genesis has a very loyal following, but after spending time on the Genesis owners' message boards, a few things stuck out to me. It seemed more of a "fan club" (or support group...) than practical assessment. People loved their cars despite repeated warranty issues and frequency complaints about Hyundai service. The technology in the car seemed its greatest strength and weakness with frequency issues. It seemed common dealerships ripped off the underbody plate for aerodynamics, as removing it made for easier oil service. Another piece that stuck out is Hyundai's love of robot-friendly machine screws that suffer frequent rust issues, a challenge when it comes time for service. Some users reported rusted bolts within 6 months of a new car.

They offer very much the "same amount of car" as other brands for ~ $15k less. You must consider how they can sell it cheaper, and lower profit margin isn't exactly the answer.

So I distilled what I read and decided Lexus is the way to go. I did scour this forum before purchase as well, and that's that.

Another reason to get the GS -- the '14 Luxury has adaptive headlights, which the Genesis does not.

So my Mother In Law was deciding between similar two cars (actually the ES350 and not the GS350) and ended up getting the Hyundai as an impulse buy when she went to test drive it (I was not there to stop her from being impulsive) because she was able to get a significant discount (five figures) due to connections she had. Less than six months after buying the car she rode in the ES350 loaner I had when getting some work done to my FSport. Within 5 minutes she said she made a mistake and wished she got the Lexus. She asked me to see how much she can sell her car for to get the Lexus. She thought (and I did too initially) she could actually make some money on her car since it only had 4K miles on it and she got it for a very significant discount like I said. I was shocked that the car lost over 12K in value in less than six months to the point the current selling price vs. what she paid was about break even.
I know cars depreciate right off the lot but wow....

I went around and around with this and settled into the 450h. My biggest complaint for the Genesis - mileage. Even the 350 smokes the efficiency factor in comparison. Performance (3.8 or 5.0) is lack luster and the mileage for both is an absolute showstopper.

One should ask why the Hyundai can't compete when everything else in the car is kinda close in comparison. Tech is kinda close, comfort and finish is kinda close, style and design...meh. It abundantly obvious when you drive one and diddle around with it why it's $20k cheaper.

The 100k warranty helps but it still isn't near enough to make up for its shortcomings.

The Genesis (circa 2015) is a dog. A cheap seat view trying to vie for a spot amongst Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, and BMW. Only the G80/90 start to really compete but still fall short of the goal...and they're more comparably priced - for obvious reasons.

If you have the funds to get into a top player with the right badges why would you settle for less, with less?

The G80 is basically identical to that 2015 Genesis, and they actually raised the pricing somewhat.

I personally don't really consider the G80 as a competitor to the GS, I mean it sort of is, but I can see a reason why you would pay more for the GS. Where the G80 really wins is when compared to the ES. Its a way better car than the ES.

I test drove a '15 Genesis when I was looking for a new car. I like the looks of the Genesis but was underwhelmed by the way it drove. I ended up buying the GS 350 fsport. In my opinion the Genesis looks good but the GS 350 ride is better.

Consider the GS has the lux package, it wins hands down. I don't like base spec'd cars. Blanks irk me... plus, the base Genesis would be missing most of the tech goodies that put it in the running, for me anyways.

I actually really like the way it looks. I had a 2013 hyundai genesis as a rental once and I was pretty impressed with it. Felt pretty good and the interior was nice. Would perfer my GS over that one though, although that year had a softer ride. I perfer the GS interior to the pics I looked at of the new ones.
