I just bought a 2017 GS350 with Luxury Package last month. Although I do not need tires now, I've been eying what to get when the Stock Bridgestone 235/40 19Y tires wear out. Note the OEM tires are Summer only tires. Now, I know Summer Only tires are terrible in Snow, and my intention is not to drive this vehicle in the snow. That's obvious. But while looking at tirerack.com, I was looking at the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. Low and behold, apparently, with Summer Max Performance tires, they're not only not to be used in Snow, but Not in low temperatures, either! I found the following warning:

I noticed the above warning on several Summer Tires. It states pretty clearly that you should not drive on these types of tires AT ALL until they are brought up to a temperature of at least 40 degrees F for at least 24 hours.

There is simply no way I can avoid conditions like this all the time. Although the car is garage-kept, there will be many times, in December through February, when the tires are exposed to temps below 20 while the car is parked at work.

Does this mean All-Season tires are my only option? If so, how badly will handling be affected if I replace with All-Season tires?

 

I've been dealing with the tire thing (including the matching issue on staggered Fsports) recently. Does the lux come with staggered 19's? If not disregard some of this reply.

1. Tires are a fairly subjective subject. What one considers a noisy tire might not be so for the next. Good handling? To a point, they're all going to handle well but most of us don't put the car to the limit. All I know is that <20k miles on a tire is pretty sad for the everyday owner...and for the Potenza RE050 series being $330-390 per tire, that is too rich for my blood for them only to last a year and a half on average. If you have the money and can run summer and winter setups than go right on with your badness. If not, all seasons should cut it. Totally honest, I don't need a Z or Y rated 175mph+ tire and don't need it to handle on and off ramps more than a regular car can perform its way through. Here in Virginia, all four seasons is a reality and quite honestly, while the Potenza did fine and I have no complaints (other than the shoddy wear life) I really wont ever spring for them...thus the following.

2. 235/40r19s up front and 265/35r19 on rear (fsports) makes getting all four to match an interesting undertaking (unless you spring for the Potenzas again-there seems to be a vast variety for them). It's limiting when you're shopping. One company has the fronts but not the rears and vice versa for the rears. If yours is all the same around the car and you're not entirely looking for the "best performer" on the asphalt, than go with what has the longest mileage road warranty (pending your other interests are satisfied - price, look, warranty, reputation).

You'll find that the newer Michelin PS4 comes in both sizes as does the Goodyear F1 (which I'm putting on this Saturday). The Continental ExtremeContact have some good reviews and come in both sizes. The PS4 and Conti is currently offering 30k mileage manufacturer warranty and the Goodyear F1 is 45k (which influenced my decision). I'm not terribly picky but I have my need to shop pricing and the Goodyears won my pricing war of local installers (Sams Club) also topped with an $80 discount. Pirelli, Yokohama, lower fidelity Bridgestones, Hankook, all have one or the other but not both. All offer a variety of tire wear warranties and varying prices.

Tire Rack is always an option but whom ever you send them to or take them to is going to charge you a host of things somewhat based on what TR tells them to charge plus their own requisite charges. Then you have to deal with if they'll honor the warranties if you have a problem down the road because you didn't purchase the tires with them to begin with.

Everything local to me was comparably priced once I settled on a tire; choices between The conti EC, Michelin PS4, and the Goodyear F1s. - within $100 after everything was said and done. The 45k mile warranty really was the thing that helped make my final decision. I'll drop a follow up after I get some time on them.

Just stuff to consider.

Lux is a square setup. Continental DWS06, all-season high-performance tire, popular for our cars.

Unless you're really pushing things to the limit in controlled conditions, a good all-season performance tire like the DWS06 will handle quite nicely. I would not drive on the street in a manner that the performance difference of a UHP vs. MP summer-only tire would make a significant difference.

I've had summer-only tires and was unaware of this mechanical limitation, thanks for the info! Not a big risk in TX but good to know in the case of a road-trip.

 

Spoogenet - The Continental DWS06 does not appear to be available in the size I need - 235/40 19. Do you have any other recommendations?

 

It's more of a disclaimer..

The rubber in high performance summer tires harden in cold weather, so performance degrades significantly even in the dry.

That's why I go with 2 sets of tires+rims, a summer set and a winter set.

 

Using a Summer tire anywhere near 40° or below is absolutely dangerous...even when sunny and dry. Summer tires become tractionLESS at 40°, acting much like a treadLESS hard hockey puck.

 

Missed that you're on 19" vs. my 18". The Pirelli Cinturato P7 also has been popular, if you search the forum you should find some reviews for our car.

I haven't used the Continental ContiProContact but a buddy of mine liked them on his Audi A4.

 

It does not have to be only performance tires. Regulat alr season tires hardens when cold. All weather tires have poor tread life.
3 cars in the family, all has 2 sets tires/rims for summer/winter. Our winter temperature can go down as low as -40F when wind blows.

American tire reviews (and ratings) are an absolute joke compared to the Nordic Region where they live with snow and ice for 9-months of the year ... they do not salt and plow everything all the time ... so take winter tires to another level of performance. I have Nokian winter tires mounted on steel wheels for easy winter change-out. These things defy physics ... will plow thru anything and grip snow and ice close to being on a dry surface. Amazing.

 

If you are referring to the location of the video I can assure you it's not Nordic, it's in southern Alberta just above the US border of Montana.

 

Can tell you from experience that summer tires suck in the winter or even just sub-40 degrees. Like bc said, the traction is very minimal, definitely not safe for high speed or quick acceleration. Get all seasons or two sets.

 

Definitely this, but I'm in the two set crew. Slid through an intersection and almost got taken out by a bus by thinking my car with awd on summer tires would be enough in snow. Went home and threw the all seasons on.

 

So in Orlando FL right now as I sip my coffee, it is 30 degrees outside with a high of 44 today. You mean I cant go out and finish shopping today because I can’t drive on my tires. And all I can do is stay inside and watch football and drink and be merry? I love this car!

 

Below 45-degrees, performance of summer tires is dramatically decreased and at temperatures below freezing, things become dangerous.

At 30 degrees summer tires are hard like hockey pucks, hard as a rock with practically no traction at all. If you can imagine driving on rock hard tires with no friction grip, that's what you have. That would be Extremely Dangerous!
