Are you talking about the button on the left-hand side of the dash, or the button on the trunk lid near the backup camera? I suspect your talking about the flexible membrane that covers the button on the trunk lid. If so, I suspect some chemical was likely used (or was somehow transferred onto it) that softened or coated the material with residue. Have you tried cleaning it off with something like rubbing alcohol?

I €™m referring to the one on the trunk lid. I have not tried wiping it with alcohol but it is obvious that it is the rubber membrane that is deteriorating. It €™s been happening on 3GS and 4LS models from the threads I €™ve seen so it €™s a bit annoying that this is still an issue.

Apparently this is a common issue on other Lexus models. I just ordered a replacement button for a co-worker (not eBay savvy) and found the how-to on YouTube. We both have 2008 ES350s with around 140k miles on them.. his trunk button got this way and mine is perfectly fine. Weird if you ask me. I'm surprised to see this as a problem on 2013 GS though.

The part number in the photo may or may NOT be the correct part number for the GS - you'll have to do your own research.
EDIT: 99% sure the part in the photo is NOT compatible with the 4GS - only shown to illustrate issue.
Basically the install involves removing the carpet from the back side of the trunk lid and accessing from there - it's a simple swap as long as you have the proper tool to remove the clip/retaining buttons. Trust me - BUY the tool, do not attempt with pliers and screwdrivers. It can be found at any auto parts store. Looks like this.

Yup. Have the same problem on my ES350 2009. Taking it into the dealer tomorrow, as it seems like this is clearly a defective design. Car garaged at night and at office, although temps in Dallas do get warm!

did you ever replace it? I’m having the same issue, removed the liner, but I don’t know how to take out the button/switch itself. It seems like it’s hidden behind a metal sheet, I’m assuming you’d have to somehow disassemble it from the out of the car. It’s definitely not an easy switch like the other Lexus videos on YouTube.

You have to remove the outside plastic/chrome trim around the button and the license plate lights. First step is removing the trunk lid liner, then the trunk tail lights. Then the plastic/chrome trim, it's held on with clips and two bolts. Once you removed all that then you can remove the button.
I appreciate the quick response!
