The only thing that bothers me is the windshield. I have several years left on my windshield warranty. I have a slight crack on mine and was going to get it replaced under warranty in a few weeks. I wonder if I can request the replacement to be a HUD windshield instead of the regular one and pay for the difference...

Oh wow thank you so much for this. This is super useful. I will absolutely go this route.

If one were desperate, just tape a rock to a hammer and smack the windshield, then file a claim, lol, but of course this would be insurance fraud.
Otherwise the HUD will will have a shadowing effect. There are aftermarket films for HUD(most are reflective), so I have no idea if it will work as an alternative.

I'd try that. There is no cost effective way of replacing the windshield other than an insurance claim or warranty.

Otherwise the HUD will not be clear, it will have a shadowing effect. There are aftermarket films for HUD(most are reflective), so I have no idea if it will work as an alternative.

Here is a used 2013 GS dash with opening for the HUD, so you get a idea where you would have to cut the dash.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/132439997037
Looks like with the plastic shroud you would have about .25-.5 inch margin of error in either direction for making the cut.
I'd make a small cut in the general area, install the projector, mark it through the opening, take it out and use that to get the measurements for making the rest of the cut. The HUD has ability to adjust the display up and down so doesn't necessarily have to be that precise and the shroud will cover up your cut.

However, in the mean time, I am going in for service next week to have the windshield replaced under warranty but I am paying up the difference to upgrade to the HUD windshield.
Will let you know how it goes!

Just clearing up some misinformation as the 2013 HUD also displays navigation directions, radio/Satellite station, iPod track, RPMs, ECO performance, the gear you are in when you use M mode, and speed.

While the 2013 is nice and would work, I am hunting for the 2014 or 2015 projector since it displays more information and in color (I think?).

I believe it is optical projection coming out of dash opening.

They were eager to do it under warranty plus an additional ~$350 for time and material. I decided to hold off on the windshield until I can actually find the meter. Ebay has a bunch but they are all for different cars. I need P/N 8314130160. Hard to come by. Might be easier to buy a salvaged GS at auction. :

Here is the post for a forum member who swapped the dash:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...on-hud-gs.html
I talked to someone else who simply cut the opening in the dash. the rails the projector slides into are already in our dash along with the wiring.
As you see in his pic the HUD makes you feel drunk, because he doesn't have the HUD windshield.

I went ahead and ordered all the parts, including the new dash piece with the pre-cut HUD opening; I posted about that HERE. It was expensive but hey... if I break my existing one while trying to remove it, at least I will have a spare handy! I am waiting on the parts to arrive and will most likely document the process for the benefit of others. Depending on how much time I get, I hope to have this project complete this month.
edit: btw, is the "Panel Sub-Assembly" the actual HUD unit?
