That's why I go to the dealer. And from my perspective, the day I can't pay someone to do it for me, just shoot me

So much this.

My dad says his BMW has a little compartment cap accessible from above.
Remove the cap, pull out the filter, drop in new, replace cap.
No mess, no working upside down, no need to remove covers or deal with spring loaded drain holes -- I honestly can't believe that Toyota developed an oil filter procedure more complicated than the Germans.

At least it's only every 10k miles...

A spin on is self contained and makes less of a mess for me. No futzing around with extra hoses, o-rings and two piece housings and special filter wrenches.

They are probably here to stay. I was servicing a lady's Corolla and could not get the plastic housing off.
I have the tool with flutes and slots; I pulled so hard I thought I would crack it.
I asked her to take it to a shop; they broke it loose.
I did not have any penetrating fluid with me; perhaps that would have helped.

Maybe someone will build an adapter for these canister filters...
You may remember the pre 1968 Chevrolet canisters that had the long bolt; I serviced a bazillion of 'em when I worked at the Mobil station.
Loved that job...
