On a side note on top of live traffic and weather, the 2015 also shows the speed limit sign, and rendered picture of major intersections on the highway when you approach it. It's much better than the 2013-2014 nav.
Good read! This is definitely a fee-sable retrofit I'd love to do. I have complete faith in you and is so much easier than that Russian 16+ conversion.
So Yes the backup camera systems are wired completely different. 2013 Looks like it goes to the back of the headunit and 2015 is wired to the back of the 12.3" display.
Might be easier to find an aftermarket backup camera solution or live without a backup camera.
So just to confirm here: you can put a 2015 radio in using the special display cable and antenna cable adapter, and everything works except the backup camera??
Cool idea...but just an FYI, I'm pretty sure that even with the SD card for the map data you can't upgrade the maps yourself. The SD card in my 2015 LS460 was corrupt and had to be replaced. Each SD card ships with a unique PIN that only the dealer has and they need to hook it up to their system to input that PIN before the system will operate on the new SD card.

Yes everything works except the backup camera. I might just live without it, part assist and my side mirrors are sufficient enough.
When I sent you the 2015 wiring, I didn't really look what the changes were. I dug around a little, maybe some of it will help you.
2013
2015
2015 rear camera CANBUS goes from Pins 1 and 4 and taps into Pins 15 and 16 of the Network Gateway ECU and is the control signal that tells the camera to activate.
2013 Has a Network Gateway ECU but the camera is not tapped into the Network Gateway ECU on pins 15 and 16. I think it might be worth a shot to tap it how the 2015 has it, it's a low voltage communication signal so you won't damage anything (in theory). And if that does not activate the camera, then I'd say get the 2015 camera from car-part.com and replace the one you have. You'll just need to get connector.
If anyone wants to do this mod, I have an extra set of this wire:
The only way to get this is to pick it of a 2015+ wiring harness.
Asking $50, to help recoupe the costs on my end.
I'm living without the backup camera, not a big deal since I have the parking sensors. Maybe in a few years I'll score a deal on a 2016+ head unit and try hooking that up.
I decided to take the dive. My failing OEM unit might simply be a loose connector because its odd how intermittent the power/off and rebooting is, but it could just be its time as well.
I sent pictures of my headunit to Rhino, and model year. They said theirs is compatible. They also actually pick up the phone so hopefully support is good. But the biggest reason I went with Rhino is they are offering a 4G ram Android 8.x version that they said boots much faster (and I'm expecting the 4G RAM addresses a lot of the selection / UI lag). Hopefully things like Air Con (number values not just low/high), backup camera, air bag light etc just work. At least for the last two things there seems to be guidance on the forums on how to fix them, and honestly I've never used auto AC, I've always just used fan speed settings in combination with high or low (maybe an old person thing- not used to auto controls but to manual). Also hopefully it has the pollen filter control as well. All those things addressed I think it wraps it up. Oh and Rhino has additional module options and in this case the apple carplay android auto module is included. Sounds like with other vendors it just comes with it (advertised as a built in feature). Some people have complained of android auto lag so again hopefully this newer unit with more RAM will be better off.
Its shipping from China so it will be a while, but will report back in.
