So cutting edge and innovative, they forgot to replace 2018 with 2019 in the press release.

"Comprehensive Safety Comes Standard
The 2018 Lexus GS remains a rolling testament to the brand’s pursuit of cutting-edge safety technology. "

There was no reason for them not to produce a 2019 GS since they offer a 2019 GSF.

I have fully expected there to be a no/minimal change 2019 GS. The confirmation of this is a good thing for me. I don't want to give up my 2015, which will hit the end of its lease this year. Now, worst case scenario is that I just replace it with a 2019 and, though I would be giving up the GS that I love, I can replace it with another, very similar GS.

Why was this press release even necessary? And, why now?

Looks like Toyota/Lexus released a batch of press releases yesterday and today (4Runner, GS, Tacoma, Tundra, GX, LX, RC F). They always make a new press release each year, if only to confirm that it's still in production and to inform on whether or not any changes have been made. The releases are generally timed to coincide with the arrival of the vehicles at the dealers. We should see the 19 GSs showing up soon.

I thought such press releases always come out in the summer, long before the next year's model are available to consumers.

It's far less consistent than that. I believe the only press release Toyota released over the summer (in terms of 2019 lineup announcements) was the new ES.

I just find the timing of the press release rather strange. The Texas State Fair starts today here in Dallas and it always has the Texas Auto Show that showcases the new models.

Those previous years' random press releases cover a span of 3½ months. That's strange in itself...
