Just came out to my car to find damage to it. Here are a few pictures. Any advice on how to fix it? I have meguiars scratch x which I'll try but not sure what to do about the paint which looks like it's cracking? Thanks.
Sucks man, take it to a reputible body shop to fix it. it should be no more than a couple of hundo. This is why I invested in a dual dash cam system with park recording for idiots like this.
Take a clay bar to it first and see how much of the white you can get off, then you'll need to compound it and polish it up. It will look a ton better, and you likely won't even notice the creases. Sorry dude.
So, for those with cams that may (or may not) get the license plate of the person's vehicle that hit you - what would you do with the video evidence and what do you expect would happen that might save you some money? .
Report the hit-and-run to your local police or sheriff and provide the video as evidence so they can go after the culprit and make a record of the incident?
Report the hit-and-run to your insurance provider and provide the video as evidence so they can start the claims process against the culprit's insurance to recover the full amount of damages so you do not have to pay your deductible?
Video or not, I'd treat it just like any other hit and run. My old car was hit while parked. I just happened to see the other car do it and got his plates as he took off.
1) File a police report. Cops aren't going after the other car unless someone got hurt.
2) Take report to your insurance company and let them worry about it.
3) Mine was about $2K in damage. Statefarm paid me and subrogated the other driver. I was not penalized for this claim. It;'s up the your insurance company to go after the other driver whether you have video or not. Video does make it easier if they so choose to use it.
4) $500 deductible
Remember to always start with the least aggressive method first. In the past, when I was using only Meguiar’s Cleaner Wax, removing paint transfer was no problem at all. So if you’re going to compound, do so very lightly.
Bummer. I would get it fixed. Good luck; I hope the good advice here helps.
There is a guy here in Silicon Valley who does incredible work for reasonable prices.
The high end dealerships use him.
Last time there was an Aston Martin there for a similar scratch.
You will absolutely need to compound/polish. Using a clay bar is going to mar the paint pretty bad, especially if you're pressing hard enough to remove the paint transfer. If you have a DAP (dual action polisher), it's fairly easy to fix, even for a beginner/novice. Watch YouTube videos. My favorites are Junkman2000 and AMMONYC. Those guys are good.
Take it by a body shop during lunchtime and have one of their guys spend 10 minutes to compound/polish the area to see what you think. $10 tip. Then you'll know if you will be satisfied by not getting it prepped and repainted.
