Default Wires to tap for aftermarket subwoofer ML

UPDATE on post #15

Ok I’ve searched posts for hours and really haven’t gotten a straight answer. Does anyone have a wire diagram for the ML amplifier that makes sense? The one I’ve found is super confusing. I just need to know what colors are + and - for the front speakers.

Long story short I had a sub installed professionally and it just still didn’t sound right. I played around with some things and it actually sounds a little cleaner (not louder but cleaner) when I reverse the polarity. I’m wondering if the installer wired the high level inputs wrong.

Also on a side note, he tapped into the factory sub wires first and there was virtually ZERO midbass. It sounded like a band pass box with a 50hz low pass crossover on it! I made him switch it to use the front door speaker wires and it greatly improved. Now it just sounds a little off and I’m looking to get it right. Pic includes the current wires tapped. Pink + and red - but not sure if that’s right

You aren't going to get it right using just the front speakers. They have a high pass on them so you won't get the low bass. You need a way to combine the signals of the front and sub outputs then filter out at about 70Hz or 100Hz or what ever your preferred frequency is.

I appreciate your help. Are you sure the fronts are not a full range signal? I get some pretty decent bass and it’s more of the higher base that seems to be an issue. When I use the sub out only I got deep bass only. I could use both and sum them together if I ran more wire

I don't believe they are. In my ES, the fronts cut off at around 65. It wasn't an ML but I would think they would be similar.
I am currently just pulling from the sub output and there is a signal to about 100Hz but it drops heavily at about 70Hz.
I am using a DSP to tune it and counter the bass reduction when the volume is increased. I need to add the front speakers into the mix to get fuller bass.

Good to know. I’ll definitely run both sub and fronts back into the audiocontrol and sum them to make sure I’m getting everything and report back.

If you want to do it right get a digital processor however above is what your looking for. Good luck, my system never sounded right until I upgraded to a DSP.

I guess excel doesn't play nice in a form post, lets try this again. Ignore the selection and channel part, I used that to know which channels I used for my DSP.

If you want to do it right get a digital processor however above is what your looking for. Good luck, my system never sounded right until I upgraded to a DSP.

I know it will sum but I’m not sure it will sum all into the 3rd channel for output and I think this is the only channel they want you using for a sub to ensure Accubass works..

It looks like you need to set an internal jumper to enable summing but this will only sum into channel 1. Using channel 2 will automatically assign to channel 3 (if there is no sub input). But I don't see a reason to split them unless he was attempting to sum the channels.

I don't see a way to sum multiple inputs into channel 3. You could use channel one and the crossover on your amp but then you would lose the accubass.

This is how I am reading the instructions. I may be missing something.

This is also why a DSP is a little easier to use.

You’re right channel summing only works from the main channel and not the third channel. If Accubass still works for the main channel output then my theory will work. If Accu base only works on the third channel then I’m also thinking that maybe I could use the left front channel and the sub channel as the left and right and plug them into left and right of channel 3 to sum it that way. I’m not sure if that will work

You would need to confirm that the channel 3 output is strictly mono or can be made mono. Otherwise you will be feeding two different signals into the sub amp. Might do some weird things.

Good point. I looked at my mono block amp instructions and it states that if you feed it a left and right RCA it automatically sums the channels together to make a mono signal out to the speaker so I think I’m in business. Just have to wait till I can get the installer to run more wire for me and also unplug my ML sub at the same time and I’ll report back.

UPDATE

Heres an update for those interested. I just learned a lot about this today and I still have some questions unanswered. Nonetheless I hope this helps someone in a similar situation.

I met the installer again to try different stuff out to improve the sound. (Just to recap I have an audiocontrol LC7i line out, JL JX500/1 500 watt amp, and a sealed JL 13” thin line sub that came in a JL box made for it.) We tried many combos:

-subwoofer polarity normal and reverse
-unplugging the factory sub for any cancellation issues
-get signal to audio control from ML sub, ML front, and a combo of both summed
-play with every dial on the audiocontrol, JL amp, crossover, radio, etc
​​​​​​-move the sub to different positions
-trunk open vs closed
-sending signal straight to the amp with a headphone to rca cable from his iPhone playing YouTube music

You may be surprised to learn that bass sounded BEST and most even thruout the range when skipping the entire ML system and audiocontrol and sending iPhone signal directly to the JL amp. That tells me that there is so much extra processing in the ML head unit/amp combo that it’s never going to sound as good with an added sub vs adding a sub to an aftermarket head unit or maybe replacing the audiocontrol with a GOOD sound processor like an audison bit one or something similar.

Im not willing to invest in something like that just for a subwoofer alone so I’m left with plan b. The SECOND best sounding scenario was using the ML front output into the audiocontrol and reversing the phase of the subwoofer. The ML sub out still definitely seems to be crossed over way too low and I’m not sure why others seem to have no problems using it. Don’t ask me why because neither I or the installer could explain it. But we both agreed that there was less “distortion” in certain bass lines when wired this way and it was definitely reversed phase. All in all it sounds pretty decent and I suppose I can’t complain about being less than perfect.

2 extra observations: bass and especially midbass sounds significantly louder and better when I’m sitting in the front seat and the trunk is open all of the way. This is the exact opposite of every other subwoofer setup I’ve ever had in a car. Also it seems that the subwoofer is working and moving much more than I think it is when I listen in the car and then go to the trunk to look at how much it is moving. Perhaps a hatchback would get more of that sound into the cabin?

I even faced the sub where it fires directly into the pass thru hole into the cab and it didn’t make much difference. For now my best spot has remained against the back seats facing directly up at the rear deck.

Also one of my my reference songs for testing bass response was the chain smokers Coldplay song something like this. About 30 seconds into the song the bass starts and goes thru 3 different bass notes/octaves : low/med/hi bass. They should all sound equally loud. The way I have my setup now they are close. With the trunk open OR with the iPhone input they are perfect. When using the ML sub out the low octave was MUCH louder than the medium or high. No bueno.

Any my input is welcome and hopefully this helps someone in the future trying to do what I did.
