Over the past two weeks, I have been looking at 2018 Audi Q5s. I'm not really sure why but I kind of like them and some of the feature therein. Looking around now to see what kind of deals dealers are doing on them.

I sold my 2014 GS for a 2015 Q5, which formerly was in the family, the family member bought a 2018 Q5 Prestige. Mine is the older generation, six cylinder, and just a wonderful vehicle. It has been totally reliable in both our hands for 45,000 miles.
The 2018 Q5 Prestige is of the new generation, and it appeared to be a wonderful car as well. However, a cell-phone using driver recently ran a red light and did $25,000 damages to the Q5, the body shop expects to finish up with repairs in the next week or so. It had less than 4,000 miles and was in perfect condition, ouch!!! So far, we were quite happy with the 2018 Q5, a 2 liter turbo four with the DSG seven-speed transmission, and lots of technology.
My sister and a cousin have older Q5s with no issues at high mileage, they have been solid cars and maintained by the book. They are comfortable and very engaging to drive, I think they are the best all-around five seater crossovers on the market. Not as cushy as Lexus RX perhaps, but far, far better to drive, more responsive and tracks in their highway lanes like no RX ever did.

I like the Q5. We looked seriously at the previous gen Q5 when we ended up buying our RX. The Q5 was a bit too small for our needs of the time, but had it been a bit bigger I think we would have went with it. Great vehicles.

The Q was nice but I am not sure I see myself in an SUV of sorts. I drove the RX over the summer and it did not do much for me either. Some of the tech in the Audi I like but it's tech and always changing and going out of style all too quickly.

The Q5 is a nice car. Driven the 2011 2.0t (parents') and 2017 2.0t (GF's parent's) and they're good cars. Haven't had any real major problems with it except the oil consumption problem in the 2011 one, but it was fixed under warranty.
I haven't driven the new ones, but if it were me, I'd only get it if it came with the 3.0 V6. The V6 is basically the same V6 in the S4, S5, A6, etc but detuned. It's a powerful motor and bulletproof. Unfortunately, I don't think they offer it with the new gens.

You can get a 2018 SQ5 for the price of a GS right now. I prefer it over the X3 M40i, but I think I'm in the minority. If you're looking for an SUV replacement for your GS, you should be looking at these two models and not the 2.0l's.

I was cured of any desire for anything Audi after I saw what my brother in law went through with his 2010 a few years back. The thing was a ticking time bomb evidently and when things started to go wrong, it was a disaster. Audi’s parts model is also insane. You can’t buy parts. You have to buy groups of parts.
Id say if you want to dabble with German cars, go with BMW. At least you can buy individual parts and there are tons more enthusiast and DIYs available. I guess Audi’s are nice, so long as you don’t have to frequent a shop.
The RX shouldn’t even come to play in this comparison. We have one. It’s a Camry on stilts. Nice, reliable, comfortable and oh so boring. The 16+ are a nicer drive and interior, but still...Yaaaaawn! Only reason have one is because we needed the extra trunk space and none of the cool Toyota/Lexus wagons or SUVs are sold in the US. Just the vanilla ones...pretty sad!

Audi interiors are nice, and I like the way Audi’s look in general (though I don’t particularly like the look of the Q5 for some reason.)
I think people tend to confuse craftsmanship with reliability. Audi’s are generally well crafted but like any other European car they are historically not as reliable as a Toyota.
My father in law has a S8 and he loves the darn thing. Keeps saying how reliable it is, even though he’s had to replace a whole host of things including two high pressure fuel pumps and part of the variable air intake manifold, as well as other items, to the tune of thousands and thousands of dollars.
I remember last last year when he cracked a fog light he dished out 800 dollars. I mean come on, that’s insanity.

Carbon build up will be your enemy. Like many amazing German vehicles; they are great in their own ways, fit and finish are solid and hands down are leaps and bounds ahead of Lexus in many areas especially in the interior design and technology especially the last 5-7 years dept but Audi's in particular have major engine reliability and electronics issues just look at the reliability scores and owner comments or have a look in the Audi forums and you will see how many issues they have in particular "Q" line of SUVs. If you are leasing then you will never have to worry about this but if you are thinking long term then good luck with the Audi.
