So the takehome is that I should use 0w20 fully synth regardless of climate? It's been 40 degrees this week (105 in Funny numbers) should I stay with the manufacturer's recommendation?

Unless you are towing or racing, yes, 0w20 should be fine. There should be a temp range in the manual, which I don't have in hand at the moment, that should show the oil needed for expected temps. If the temp doesn't drop below 30°C ever at night and continues to be 40°C during the day, I'd maybe consider 5w30 but only for as long as the temp were that hot. As mentioned before, you can blend in a few qts of 5w30 with your normal 0w20 and come up with 2w24 if you really want to fine tune it. I run 0w20 year round and have -10°C all the way to 40°C here but not for extended periods of time and mine sits in a heated/cooled garage overnight.

If you remove the oil pan bolt on an engine that has ran fresh oil for 1 hour you will see the oil come out nice and golden, if you do the same after 1k it will get darker, and so on after that.
