Default Door Side Sills dirty - is this normal?

Does anyone else have an issue of water (from rain) or dirt and dust getting in on the lower/outer part of the door sills? If you take a look at your door sill, there's the metal "LEXUS" and then two other "tiers" towards the outside of the car. Those two "tiers" in my GS350 are typically dirty and when it rains, gets wet.

I'm curious to know if this is normal? I don't recall seeing it any other lexus I've owned, but maybe since I've sworn off alcohol in 2019, I've started noticing it.

Yes it’s not really sealed well, so dirty water gets trapped in there and evaporates leaving grime and dust. I usually try to wipe it out every other wash with a old dirty towel.

Every other wash? I wipe it every wash, and often between washes. I just got an idea... I'm going to seal the paint in that area this weekend with some Sonax PNS. I if wonder that will cause the water to bead and runoff... I'll soon find out.

No it won't, at least not completely. My area there is ceramic coated and it still builds up, but not as badly as it did before it was coated.

I always just blast those suckers with the pressure washer and then dry them when I'm all done with everything else. You can safely use a pressure washer on them without soaking your interior, just aim the nozzle away and go quickly.

Yup, I imagine living in Florida and getting rained on every few days that may be a necessary routine for you. Here in Ohio we may go 10-15 days without seeing a drop especially in the summer months. Plus we have too many cars in the garage
(7 vehicles) for me to be OCD on my daily driver like that.

I think all door sills in cars get wet and dirty. It's one of the first things I tackle when I wash the car. I'll spray my sills with water and gently wipe them with a soft cloth between washes because I don't like seeing them dirty. I also clean the bottom door seals at the same time.

I just use a wet soft microfiber and wipe them down after each wash. I always battle water drips from the side mirrors and trunk section... too after drying it off. I just use compressed air in those areas to purge excess water in the nooks and crannies. Invariably I always get drips on the car if I don't blow these areas out.

I was wondering the same thing if it was normal or not. Our roads were a little wet but it wasnt raining and when I got out, there was dirt build up and its just hard to look at on white paint.

Take a look at the door's bottom rubber seal and you can see where it compresses on the upper sill step, so the lower sill (below where the rubber seal meets and compresses to the upper part of the sill) gets wet and dirty. The rubber seal should be opened up and cleaned - it's a split type circular seal configuration design that can easily be opened up with your finger/cloth and cleaned. Also, the inside-bottom of the doors (below the door seal) should also be cleaned wherever the car is washed.

Did you use any special detergent? Amazon has a line of Optimum No Rinse products that are designed to use as little water as possible.

I've been using Optimum No Rinse on my GS for 5 years, works great.
