So you don't run a hotspot through your phone? Meaning you have a separate wifi plan in your car? I wonder how expensive and effective that is. But yeah, Airplay looks like something they're working on. So let's cut them some slack a little lol
Its an extra $20 per month for the line only but it uses my unlimited data. I got the cradlepoint wifi switch with a verizon modem off ebay for $50. Its a little excessive, but it works great if you are going on a roadtrip or travel a bunch. There have been several times where the hotspot had signal but the phones were not strong enough to reach the cell tower.
The best part is if you have wifi calling, for whatever reason, the phone using wifi calling over the wifi "hotspot" is exceptionally resistant to dropping calls. I went on a road trip to the grand canyon, and there where periods where my hotspot had not signal for about 10-15 seconds , causing the call to lose all audio, once the signal and interenet came back, the call continued like nothing had happened.
And for all you guys that have audio only coming from the front speakers, here's how you fix that. Turn off surround sound for the aux input. And below are some of my install pics. You can notch the 12v/ usb / aux " plate" in the cable to fit 2 usb cables from the GROM. I used 2 10' USB 3 cables, but i think 6-8 would work fine, as i had to bundle up the excess cable length for both.
They are working on it. I asked for a partial refund. stay tuned.
Also anyone that is having random reboots or screen glitching , I would ask for an RMA; you either have a bad box or a bad harness. I have never had a BSOD, only had apps crash once and a while ( carplay, and dashlinq crashed once, and immediately restarted).
So has Grom not responded to complaints of shoddy workmanship?
They played down the poor cable workmanship with me. The pretty much said any cables (shielded or not) will exhibit interference if routed too close to each other..Bunch of BS!

I would ask for RMA but I'm well beyond my 30 days period. I guess I'm screw! I'll just live with the screen glitches. It only happens on OE interface, which I never use anyways. GROM's plug-ins crash alot for me, so I never use them. Only other app that crash for me is Car Launcher, can't blame that on GROM though. BSOD happens so infrequently it's more of a nuisance than a big problem...a hard reset button would be a good remedy for that. Not a perfect box, but I'll take it with all its quirks. Rather do that than go back to crappy Lexus Enform Suite.

You have a 18 month warranty on workmanship, that interference BS is a straight LIE. The cable carries a LVDS signal and is shielded. LVDS is specifically DESIGNED to prevent and nullify any interference using common mode rejection; that's why there are 3 conductors in the cable, 1 for LVDS+, 1 for LVDS- and one for ground. Its the same as displayport but only using 1 lane per connector. Do you ever see interference issues with a computer outputting displayport to a monitor? NO.
GROM AUDIO is a small business, they are not google. If they don't rectify your issue, I would take them to small claims court, they are local to NorCal. There is no reason why they can't make a decent cable, I did. :/
P.S. if they say its GVIF, that is also a balanced cable and uses common mode rejection to get rid of interference. Whatever they say, the LEXUS oem nav unit doesn't have the glitching issue, and GROM has to use the same signal type as the OEM nav, so it's not Lexus's choice of signalling that caused the issue, ITS GROMS workmanship.
Sorry, I just got a case of the angry engineering fits; I cant stand when companies/people LIE to people who don't know any better; I have made many mistakes in my career and I always come clean and rectify them.
It is dishonorable to hide behind someone's lack of understanding in your field to hide your mistakes @gromaudio
I don't shop with companies or mechanics that do that.
Totally agree with you Bob. Do I want a VL2 unit that works better..hell ya! But I don't think it's worth my time chasing this issue any further. I don't want to tear up my dash, yank everything out and risking more rattles or breaking something. Ship it all back to GROM and then wait for a replacement unit. Two more hours of my time wasted to re-install everything. All just on a gamble that it might work better without screen glitches or BSOD. I like my unit as is. It does 95% of everything I expected. I can only hope future firmware update will fix BSOD. I'm glad you found the cable issue and bought it up to GROM. They should fire whoever did that shoddy work. Future GROM customers need to know what they're getting into with this unit. It's not perfect, but nothing is in life.
Thanks for the offer Bob. But I totally suck with a soldering iron. I took electronic classes back in college days. Failed all my soldering tests and burned up bunch circuit boards. You never get the smell of a burning resistor out of memory!
I switched to a Business Major, best decision I've made in my life
