Default Oil filter housing question....

So I did my first at home oil change in my 2014 GS350 Fsport today and noticed something a little odd. I was expecting to find a filter housing with a drain plug and 3/8” square hole in the end. Instead I found one with no drain at all. The filter that came out was correct and fit like it should. This is a certified car and all of its service has been completed by the dealership until this one. Would the dealer have swapped this out?

You need THIS

P.S. Some have the middle drain and some don't. My 2015 does, my buddies 2013 doesn't.

Thanks for the info. Getting it off wasn’t a problem I was just trying to understand why it wasn’t the type I expected.

I have a V6 Camry and when I got my GS350 I thought the same thing. My guess is that Toyota determined that most people didn't actually utilize the drain port so got rid of it or it's the fact that on the GS the filter is mounted horizontally so it really wasn't that beneficial. On the Camry it's mounted vertically so it will actually drain but even then I rarely used it when changing my oil.

Does anyone know if the filter housing with the drain port is still used on other engines?

My 14 RX has a drain port, my 18 GS does not. The 18 actually has a plastic oil filter housing which I always torque to spec.

I find the drain port is more trouble than it's worth. That plastic piece that comes with the new filter is a real pain to remove after you finish draining. It ends up taking longer and making a bigger mess than just removing the housing.

I have it but I don't use it.

I heard there are 3rd party drain tools that make it easier to use the drain port, but I never bothered.
