Satellite radio sounds more bass heavy than my Spotify bluetooth stream for example. I'd imaging the Bluetooth connection has a lower audio quality. CD should produce the highest and best sound, which is why we still have one in our cars. Less compression on the audio files. I might look into tossing some high bit-rate mp3s on a USB drive to see what things sound like.
Amazing! Even aux jack out of my phone sounds amazing. Anything Bluetooth and fidelity drops massively. Most of the ML meh reviews come from compressed sources. I get it though cables and USB sources are so yesterday, but you can’t fight compression. Just less of s factor on non ML.

Best sound on my ML tends to come through remastered audio sources, high bit rate, direct cable connection to my iPod. I suppose CD's would be great as well but I don't use those anymore.

Will the GS play uncompressed/ low compression files off a USB stick? Is a smartphone's DAC good enough to justify low comp files played through the 3.5mm? I've been very impressed with CD audio through my ML, the stock system must be incredible if above comments are to be consumed

I have one of these in my ML equipped ES:
https://www.amazon.com/Android-Master-Quality-Digital-Player/dp/B07FKT9V56/ref=pd_ybh_a_25?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=RG4D1JYN1ZVG7HQZPYTX https://www.amazon.com/Android-Master-Quality-Digital-Player/dp/B07FKT9V56/ref=pd_ybh_a_25?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=RG4D1JYN1ZVG7HQZPYTX

It's great being able to play DSD and 24/192 FLAC files. Phones just don't stack up to it. It also supports almost 1TB of storage!

Very nice. Using one in my car will have my licence disqualified and up to a $1540 USD fine so I'll admire it's metallic beauty from here!

I just plug it in, start it up and set it in the center console and close the cover. How is that illegal?

Technically having it in the console isn't illegal here but I wouldn't be able to pause/change songs etc. We have fixed cameras that detect phone usage which result in fines and disqualification.

The same laws apply where I live. I only need to stop it when I get out of the car. I don't use it all the time, just on long trips. Otherwise, 320k MP3's on a flash drive work quite well.

A steering wheel button interface would work wonders for skipping tracks but only fixed headunits tend to support that. I know it's subjective but how noticeable is the difference between a decent mp3 and a proper FLAC in car?

It's quite noticeable, especially the low end. Some of it may have to do with the DAC in the standalone player, though. I have both sources set to all mid for the 3 band EQ in the HU.

I'm tempted to go back to CDs as old fashioned as it sounds, indash 6 stackers aren't even standard equipment anymore!
