Water Pump at 45k?
2015 F Sport. Wife was driving it this weekend and I ‘heard’ her pull in the driveway. Sounded like she brought home a diesel 1976 Mercedes. No leaks so I thought it was a bad pulley bearing or similar. Brought it to dealership today and water pump was bad at 45K.
Has anyone experienced this? I’ve had the car since 4/18 @ 31k miles.

That's actually the first water pump I've heard about failing on the 4GS model. They are mechanical, so it's subject to fail like anything else mechanical...but most last well beyond what yours did.
It's like that light bulb that's supposed to last 1,000 hours but burns out after a few weeks. The average may be 1,000 hours, but some don't last very long and others last much longer.

But the good thing is the GS engine bay is very spacious and I could probably DIY this.

There is no sceduled maintenance for the waterpump, supposed to last the life of the car. I've personally owned a Honda with 232k mile on it original water pump. Its mechanical and all metal so odd yours failed. Not like my friends Jetta that had plastic in the waterpump.

IMHO it's probably just a "one off" dud pump or something. At least on most toyota type products you usually get a warning like noise or an incremental coolant leak. There's an excellent chance the next one will be good for over 200K.
Classic example- in my 2010 Camry the pump failed at around 86K, it developed a slow coolant leak which took me awhile to figure out. Once I did I got it fixed under my extended warranty. Ran the car out to 260K after that before I traded it in on my GS, never failed again.

~$210 in genuine parts. I've not changed one before (haven't owned a VW) but it looks super duper easy as it hangs out the front of the engine.

Yeah that's the good thing about the GS engine setup, it's just there in the front. My old Camry V6 water pump was on the side next to the suspension and requires engine removal I think.

It wasn't leaking but rather just the bearing 'rattle'.
Fortunately it was covered by warranty still (standard rather than CPO). I am guessing that the dealer would have charged ~$450 total.
Hope I just got that 'dud' water pump mentioned earlier.

Yeah, sometimes you get a bad one. I replaced the water pump on our 2006 TSX at about 100K.
They usually go much further than that.
Ultimately all water pumps, fuel pumps, PS pumps, alternators, etc. will fail.
In the big scheme of things, you are driving a very reliable car.
All good. Enjoy your new water pump!
