Default Digital rearview mirror from rav4

Is it possible to switch out our regular rear view mirror with the digital rearview mirror like they have in the new Rav4? I figure since it's all in the family and so much of our cars are plug and play, it might be possible.

I know the aftermarket ones exist but I was wondering for an original Toyota part replacement.

The auto family is not the relevant bit: most Lexus parts are not interchangeable across models. The current rear-view mirror is an exception because it's a self-contained part that needs only power to function.

Things like the new digital mirrors make use of a new rear-facing camera, which our vehicles do not have.

It certainly may be possible to integrate these newer things but not without a significant amount of wiring or CAN bus engineering.

Whats wrong with the regular rear view mirror? Isn't there a camera in the back for the digital rear view mirror so you get an unobstructed view of the rear without the interior? If not whats the point?

Yes, the RAV4 has a camera mounted above the rear window for this feature. It’s pretty cool but I don’t see the value on a sedan.

I'm guessing it can switch back to being a normal mirror in the event of a failure or the car is off. Yeah sounds cool but also agree not much more to gain for sedan. 360 top down view would be cool.

Yeah, you have the option to go with either. I played with it in my folks' new RAV4. I believe the default is the regular mirror. You can turn on the camera mirror if your back cargo area is filled to the top, blocking the view out the rear window. It's a pretty nice feature, I think.

Ah ok makes sense for a suv or crossover but not really for a sedan since you wouldn't put anything on the rear deck to cover the window.

I have it on my Highlander. I think it's pretty nice, though not necessarily a "must-have". Pretty cool tech, though.
