Hybrid TechnologyUnique topics related to the GS450H model hybrid drivetrain and other features/options found only on the GS450H. Please use the main 4GS forum for discussion about shared components with other fourth generation GS models.
I've already searched for: Production numbers; Production figures; year to year; 45 minutes later... Nothing! As I have read hours and hours worth of posts/discussions about the GS, I have seen members report... "Finally found the UNICORN"... "less than 200 hybrid GS's made in such and such year"...
I have found great statistics reported about TOTAL GS sales year to year from a couple of internet sources. But I cannot find any reliable or anecdotal info specifically relating to the GS HYBRID production/sales figures.
If you have any ideas/sources please share.
Not many in the USA is the answer. 2013 was the best year at approx. 1200 I believe. Look at Greencar reports or something like that. Hybrid sales are shown by year. The GsH is a unicorn, but I have one since May now, and it is a soothing quiet ride until the beast takes flight.
I've never seen a single one of them in MA. Plenty of RX hybrids etc, but GS? not a one. Probably because the as-new price was pretty retarded- to the point where the average user would never recover the price difference in "gas money saved" etc. It's a much better value on the used side.

U.S. figures by model year of the GS 450h - based on registrations of how many are out there today
2013 - 1,171
2014 - 83
2015 - 103
2016 - 70
2017 - 54
2018 - 45
U.S. Sales by year (info comes from HybridCars.com) - I filtered by only Lexus vehicles to give you a comparison:
Note: The number of 2013 GS450h is 1129 since they were introduced in 2012 as 2013's. The U.S. Dept of Energy tracks the # of units sold in respective years.
Not far off from @marjenmill's numbers - no way which way you put it, the car is extremely rare. You'll be shocked to see two side by side out in the wild

The volumes I shared are based on decoding the VIN of all US based vehicles so 2013's are lumped together and based on model year, not year sold and represent what are still registered today (being driven). There are an additional 145 450h's in Canada too (2013-2018).
By model year, the registered vehicles for the GS F in US/Canada
2016 - 1,347/38
2017 - 332/12
2018 - 156/2
2019 - 125/4
Golly, I have known this forum has an awesome membership for a great while, but amazed I am. Your responses were more than I had hoped for!
Thank you all,
Daniel

There are only 145 GS450h's in Canada TOTAL?!?! Wow, I'm really driving a unicorn! Love my 450h!
@marjenmill - thanks for those additional details. Do you mind sharing where you pulled the registered VIN data from? Also, how do you know the patterns of the VINs (like how to distinguish GS vs GSh, vs GS-F, etc)? Just curious for the future in case others need to reference it.

As opposed to so much wasted time engaging with search engines that offer more sales opportunities than the content requested.
Thank you all,
Daniel
You welcome Daniel. Glad to help. Another reason for the decline in numbers (at least recently) is because the GS450h is no longer mass produced; you have to custom order it. That's why you don't seem them parked and sold alongside the non-hybrids at dealerships. I believe that switch happened for the 2017 model year and later, but I honestly forget.
Forgot to give you a welcome here, but this forum (specifically the 4th Generation GS [4GS] subforum) is a wonderful community. There are so many knowledgeable individuals here who are more than wiling to help and even tackle projects together. We have an amazing list of pinned topics that are incredibly helpful for new folks.
If you're interested in the hybrid specifically and want to know more about the vehicle/technology, I suggest checking out this subforum dedicated to the 4GS hybrid: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/hybrid-technology-242/

P.S. - I own one too - you can read my story in my signature.
Thanks im2bz2p345... I recently reread all the older posts, and freshly read all the newer posts in the GSh sub forum (five pages). Took a few hours. But based on all those "vignettes" I made up my mind that I wasn't going to wait any longer for that perfect color combination to appear with "lower" miles... I readjusted my "need set", focusing only on loaded/luxury pkg/dealer upkeep.
I then hit all the cargurus/CARFAX/auto trader/etc... Found one in BLACK/flax. After having a black car once before, and swearing I'd NEVER deal with the freshly hand polished, hand detailed, 15 minutes later exposure to the pollen-storm-ridden, gloriously green, lush, countryside where I reside... I made up my mind that my comfort, and driving experience trumped my pride, and frustration with... BLACK!!!
So yesterday I made the phone call and the lovely Lexus salesperson had to find another salesperson who verified that my "newly-acceptably-perfect", black, loaded/luxury/with average miles GSh was being written up at that moment. Verified today as SOLD and delivered!!! Can you hear my pain?
So I move sadly into the future, looking for that "any-color-whatsoever" loaded/luxury GSh unicorn... Moannnnn...
Reiterating... Thanks so much for the thoughtfulness and generosity of effort!

Oh, I can feel the pain through your keystrokes. Unfortunately, most of us 4GS hybrid owners, that purchased used, had to look for months to find the "perfect" vehicle (perfect in the sense of the word that you already know - figure out what things potential buyers are willing to give up to get other features).
The demand is quite large for the hybrid vehicles in the used market. There are never more than a dozen or so available regardless of where you look, scattered all over the U.S.
Are you looking for a CPO (certified pre-owned) vehicle only? Luxury package is tough to find, but I recommend that you hold off on jumping into anything that doesn't have such an important upgrade. The luxury package provides a lot.
Keep your hopes up and keep some browser searches saved so that you can quickly perform them at least once a week, if not more.
I'll respond to your PM and let me know if I can help you out in any other way. All the best friend.
Thanks for the guidance. I have been contemplating and searching for (I won't admit how many double digit MONTHS)... But being extremely particular is something I have SUFFERED from lifelong...
My less particular parameters are now ONLY: '13-'15; Levinson; lane keep assist; precollision system; good to excellent maintenance; any color; AND not requiring, but hoping for, luxury package and HUD...
So for each and every SAINT among you folks, if you would care to take the time to put a post-it note on your refrigerator OR a note in your smartphone which says, "PLEASE remember to send poor desperate Claybo77 a personal message pertaining to ANY (loaded/luxury/4th gen GS hybrid for sale)... You will have the pleasure of knowing that you have made a grown man CRY!!! And I do not jest. Well I jest, just a little. Ha!
BTW for the seriously saintly among us... I would be glad to PM my cell number to anyone who still needs just a little more CREDIT to get their sainthood-paperwork started... Orrrrrr to anyone who just would like to chat about their experiences surrounding Lexus UNICORNS.
Great day to you ALL!

I work in the auto industry and there are companies that sell that type of info so no I can't give you VIN patterns. A simple way to figure it out is to go to the dealer's website and look at the VIN of a car that is for sale. Ignore the 9th position and last 6 positions (check digit and serial #) and you have your VIN pattern.
Also purchased a 2013 GS 450h in May love the car!
I bought mine with 118k miles I traded in my ‘10 Camaro synergy edition and my 2016 Hyundai Sonata plug in hybrid limited ultimate edition the transmission was slipping it has been rearended and keyed on both sides so even though it got 58mpg it was not worth keeping. I thought I would miss my Camaro had it 13 yrs but after driving the Lexus GS I don’t think I’d want any other car unless it’s the GS F or GS 450h f sport. These cars are amazingly quick and precise. My grandfather hates everything he has a Rx 350 super low miles he went with me for a ride and said damn if they still made these I’d buy one. He only buys. It’s a shame the Gs is gone. I grew up with rear wheel drive vehicles and man I love the thrill of feeling the rear wheels push you back into the seats. I raced a Porsche panamera and the GS really out shined especially in sport plus mode.
