It can be done I found a Russian blog post of the conversion. Hardest part is wiring the 2016+ nav controls. Looked like everything else was plug and play for the most part.
In 2016+ the mousepad interface changed and the usb in the front console is a different plug, so you would have to rewire that.
Also I think you have to change the 12.3" display, hardware is preventing it from going full screen.

Update: Not going through with this anymore. Seller never shipped the kit. It's been 2 weeks since I ordered it and the seller was supposed to ship it by 10/13. I've gone back and forth many times asking when it's shipping and trying to figure out what's going on and it keeps turning into:

Me: When is it shipping?
Seller: Tomorrow

*tomorrow comes, seller still hasn't shipped

Me: Are you still shipping today?
Seller: Sorry it'll be Monday now

*Monday comes... and the conversation basically repeats like this on and on. I applied for a refund and the seller accepted my request. Really bummed. I was really looking forward to installing this on my GS. Though at this point, I only have a year left on my '18 lease so not sure if it's even worth it at this point.

This is exactly why I stick with US based GROM. Chinese sellers are horrible with Customer Service. I'd rather pay the extra $$ to get better service. Been very happy with my GROM VL2 for the most part.

I would have stuck with Grom too but they just don't have the same product with the same features.

What features are you looking for that GROM doesn't have?

The BIG one for me with the Grom is it stretches the Carplay to fill the whole screen vs displaying gthe proper resolution to fill the 12" screen like my Lsailt unit does. There are some other things too like track forward and back not working, etc

That's weird. Pretty sure I've seen other 2017+ GS Carplay display just fine Fullscreen, not stretched. Must be different for your LS. I have no issues with track forward/backward. Only intermittent issues is a rare BSOD. Every 3-4 months I seems to get one. Hope GROM will fix it once and for all. I haven't had one for awhile.

The Grom unit at current cannot fill the widescreen without being stretched to fill it. LS and GS are the same insofar as the infotainment is concerned.

Which Grom unit do you have? The Carplay unit just came out.

I have their latest unit, VL2. I swear I've seen CarPlay on another member's GS, looks fine not stretched. But I don't use CP and my car is 2015 so I have split screen no Fullscreen. Android user here, I have no issues with Android Auto that they recently released...works great!

Does Grom have wireless car play for iPhone and Android? Also does it support mirroring? These are the two functions I wish they had.

I don't think so, but why do you need neither one of those feature? Wireless CP/AA does nothing but drain your battery. It only takes 1 sec to plug-in USB cable and it charges phone too. I can see wireless being useful if you're too lazy to plug-in USB and do alot of frequent short trips where charging the phone isn't necessary. And mirroring, again, why do you need this? GROM VL2 is a full featured Android box stand-alone unit. It can run most apps found on the PlayStore. Why bother fumbling with your phone while you're driving. Heck, I don't even need my phone in the car other than turning on Hot Spot to provide Internet access for VL2. And that could be remedied with USB WiFi dongle. It's good to see other units like GROM coming to market. That will hopefully drive down the costs of GROM in the near future. At $599, it's a bit steep but it's worth it to me for US based support.

Now I understand where the confusion is coming from. Beat Sonic is the company that just came out with one but does not allow for it to display on full screen.

Doesnt Grom not officially support Carplay? I dont see any mention on their site about the product supporting Carplay.

CarPlay certainly does work on VL2. I've seen at least 3 members posting pictures of it working in their GS...go read up toward the end of thread I posted plenty of people posting pictures of CP. I don't no if GROM officially support it or not. I know the certification process with Apple is lengthy and expensive. Maybe they chose to forgo certification but it works just fine. Same with Google and Android Auto.

I contacted Grom directly about it and they said that they do not officially support CarPlay. They won't support any issues with CarPlay either.

Probably due to all of Apple's BS certification process. I don't blame they for not officially supporting. But it does work just fine. I have not heard anyone complain about CP. You can contact member @bob256k @c2fordy5 @yelloiroc
I know they have VL2 and CP working in their cars.
